Malware Detected in one thread in the Christianity Forum

#1  Postby Weaver » Jan 01, 2013 12:17 am

!
GENERAL MODNOTE
The thread titled "Jesus Believers Might Be Shocked" because it tripped a virus warning package, indicating the entire thread has been infected with unknown malware.

I have moved the thread until we can get it disinfected, to prevent any member from inadvertently gaining access and having their computer harmed as a result.

We will get the thread moved back into the open as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that we only have a couple on staff who can deal with this sort of thing, both from a knowledge and an access standpoint, so it may take some time. Your patience is appreciated.

If any other threads on RatSkep trip anyone's virus warnings, please notify all Staff immediately, via a PM to Senior Moderators and Global Moderators.

Thanks,
Weaver

Oh, no, do you know since when?
Я пью за разоренный дом,
За злую жизнь мою,
За одиночество вдвоем,
И за тебя я пью, -
За ложь меня предавших губ,
За мертвый холод глаз,
За то, что мир жесток и груб,
За то, что Бог не спас.

Within the last week, I think - pretty sure I've checked that thread within that time frame.

Oh. Was it from a link or something? Does this happen a lot?

Unknown source. It is quite rare here. Fortunately.

I thought so, I never heard of it until now. Sorry for all the questions. I hope this doesn't happen again. I was in that thread. :(

It might be a false reading. The whole of twitter, including twitpic and the browser version of tweetdeck, was sending a malware warning to many Chrome users the other day, but there doesn't seem to have been any actual malware.
Best to be safe though, which is why we don't have much of a problem here.

Possible, but unlikely.

This one claims to have links from religion facts DOT com (link broken for protection), which McAfee asserts is a known malware distributor, and that visiting the page is likely to upload malware onto one's computer.

So, if you have not followed the link you should be fine.

!
GENERAL MODNOTE
Apparently this was a false alarm, as some suggested. Not only is the warning no longer appearing, the link cited in the warning doesn't even seem to exist in the thread.

The thread has been moved back to the Christianity forum. If anyone detects problems with it, please notify staff immediately.

It might be worth noting that RatSkep itself is completely malware-free.
Any outgoing link (on any website) can contain malware, in theory so when any AntiVir pops up a message is because they scan the content, incl. potential harms, some of which -as has been suggested- are false alarms.
