No more page splitting for long threads

#1  Postby LIFE » May 17, 2010 7:42 pm

Title says it all.

Please don't report threads when they reach a certain amount of posts (e.g. 1000) anymore :dopey:

I will also re-merge the splits based on thread length that have been done so far.

Thank you

I'm curious as to why? There are some threads, e.g. entwined haiku, old farts and pictures of thee, that are going to get very, very long...

Not complaining one way or the other, it has just been the other way for as long as I've been a member of the group.

I don't see a reason why we should split threads based on their length at all?
It just confuses...

Trying to find a post in one of those mammoth threads is going to be a mammoth task.

Well there's a "search this topic" search function :D

Trying to find a post in multiple mammoth thread probably won't make it any less of a mammoth task.

I guess none of us are used to the search function actually working!

As opposed to searching through a half-dozen different threads?

The reason why thread splitting was implemented over at RDF was because the database structure, and the construction of indexes on that structure, scaled upwards poorly once the database grew beyond a certain size. If LIFE has figured out what the underlying problem is, and his fix allows threads of arbitrary length without the search function taking enormous amounts of time, or bringing the server's processor to its knees, then the need for this procedure ceases to be. Now I happen not to be aware personally of any fixes that have been made facilitating this, but if our server admin is confident that this problem has been overcome, then I'm not going to argue. Not least because we have a server admin who, unlike a certain personage I and many others here could name, knows what he's doing. :)

I don't like vBulletin, I've used it a couple of times.

This thread has over 21000 replies and it's this board software, so your point again was...? :D

Ah... The Russians. They do everything on a grand scale. Their machinery and equipment typically have a 10X safety factor (for example a 10,000 ton capacity for a machine required to lift a maximum of 1000 tons)

I used to "work" for phpBB during the days when it was 2.x.x (support, moderator and style teams on their forums). The 2.x.x software wasn't nearly as good as vB, but the phpBB 3.x line is by far my favorite forum software. (/bias)

In regards to the topic, I much prefer keeping the threads together, so cheers!

I think the problem with system behaviour over at RDF was facilitated by those who shall not be named, rather than repaired.

Oh, did you see all the pictures of those pretty girls?

Я мечтаю встретить девушку, с которой я мог бы прожить всю жизнь :rofl2:
Just joking!
Я пью за разоренный дом,
За злую жизнь мою,
За одиночество вдвоем,
И за тебя я пью, -
За ложь меня предавших губ,
За мертвый холод глаз,
За то, что мир жесток и груб,
За то, что Бог не спас.
