Search Function Issues.

#1  Postby kiore » May 14, 2014 5:26 am

As the label says is down for maintenance, sorry about the inconvenience functionality should return, perhaps in stages, over the next 12 hours.

Oh OK. I thought I was being told off or something. Nothing makes me more paranoid than being told "you're not allowed to use the search function."

Here I am 1600 kms away from home, and I'm locked out from my internet home. As the Terminator said "I'll be back."

LIFE indicates he is making progress and expects normal service to resume soon. This could be a big job so hang in there, you can still read and post via the index page, just not search or go to new posts etc at present.

Gave me a start too! ;)

You can still use Google (or another search engine, I believe they do exists, somewhere) to search the site.

You can try: site:rationalskepticism.org keyword "key words" to return results only from the site, or additionally use the Advanced Google Search page to filter results by date rather than relevance etc. Also check out the Google search operators page for other handy tips and tricks, e.g.

site:rationalskepticism.org thwoth "[ice-cream]" OR atheism

If this site was around in the late 90s, this is what it would have been like.

Or this is how Agie gets the site with her dial-up.

Latest update:
Work continues to repair the search function, in the meanwhile it will remain disabled to prevent it causing the site to crash.
Basically this is related to the amount of data/posts overwhelming the standard board software, so an extra large version required to be synced into all the site modifications. My best understanding of the issues.
Yes it is the board software that writes the messages.. "Not allowed" code for: "oops is not working".

There's a number of issues with phpBB as it stands, the quixotic wording of its messages being just one of them. Its inability to handle HTML entities directly is another. One of the reasons why we keep getting SQL errors.
