GENERAL MODNOTE
Server switch is complete. Please be aware that pages might be responding slow at this point as I'm still tweaking the database. Not sure if I can fix everything today but should be running smoothly by tomorrow.

- Seach index still needs fixing.
- E-Mails (PM notifications etc) do not work yet, have to configure the mail server still.
- Files and attachments are still uploading.

If you find any further bugs please report them in the feedback forum.

***UPDATE 09.03.2013 ***

!
GENERAL MODNOTE
I just got notified by the Registrar and the host that the first domains have already been activated. Oddly enough, those where I started the process way after the main domain are already switched. Why in that order, is a mystery to me

In any case, the main domain might switch any minute now or within any day up to Friday.

Yes, I know this sounds ridiculous but that's the time frame I was given. This means I won't take this forum down for maintenance (as in take the board offline so a smooth database transition is guaranteed), as I don't know the exact moment when the domain will switch, so to minimize downtime will leave it up instead. To the exact point where pages won't respond if you should try to access the site, as that would be the moment where I can move everything.

If it should happen today this would be bad timing -as I didn't expect it and will be out- thus we'd have the potentially largest downtime lasting until tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, 10th March 2013). In all other cases I can react faster, so should the Registrar decide to enable the domain past Sunday the downtime would only last a couple of hours until the database transition is complete.

Either way, no need to panic if you see the page not responding. I'll do my best to have it back up asap.

Please be aware that during the downtime, our RatSkep contact emails will be inaccessible too as it's tied to the domain.

Here's hoping everything goes smoothly
Cheers!

***UPDATE***

!
GENERAL MODNOTE
Sorry to inform you but the server switch is delayed until further notice.
I just got a notification from the host that due to 'high support demand' the transfer process for the domains hasn't been looked through yet. So no downtime today or during the next days to be expected. I have no control over the transfer speed, so my hands are currently tied :(

We are currently paying for both servers and you can probably imagine my frustration that this delay will eventually get us into the next billing period (or in fact, it already has...) meaning there's currently an overhead of money spend since only one server is actively in use.

In the meantime I will focus on what I wanted to tackle after a succesful transfer, which is the actual Feedback threads amongst other things.

Sorry again, but I can't really do much about it at this point.

Step 1: The Server Switch

In the coming days we are moving to a new hosting company. This step will require a downtime of the site.
Assuming the name servers in all areas respond quickly (happens automatically but updates vary) and the domain transfer goes through smoothly this downtime should only be for a couple of hours.

Why this decision?

  • Cutting costs, the new system will only take 1/2 the monthly amount.
  • Performance, we will have a bigger machine running the site, scalable to our needs
  • Speed, the network we will be connected to is faster
  • Stability, so no more (ir)regular downtimes
  • Flexibility, there's way more freedom in terms of administration for the tech stuff, we won't be managed by an outside support team anymore (also cutting costs) that restrict access (which has happened on numerous times in the past), we'll have full control over the server.

This switch will also entail a change in the way our database is setup. Currently every time the database is being accessed through queries the addressed tables get locked completely, e.g. if someone posts nobody can post at the same time and the requests get 'queued'. This is not an issue when there's no load present but it does appear on peaks which has led to a slow response time on the server due to the database 'locking' the tables. The new system will simply introduce a new database scheme that prevents the above from happening. This will furthermore fix any broken search-related issues.

I've started the domain transfer today but due to it being a ".org"-domain it is up to the registrar how long it will take them for the domain transfer to complete. They indicate a time frame from 5-9 days, so any day from now on to +9 days you can expect the downtime and switch happening.

Once this step is complete and we are cozy with our new 'home' there will be:

Step 2: Attention to current rules and membership feedback.
I'm aware some of it is long overdue and requires immediate processing but due to the increasing server instability in the last days and weeks and due to the next billing period approaching I decided to prioritize on the server switch first as membership feedback can and should be dealt with in a more 'relaxed environment' of the forum.

Step 3: The new site, overdue since somewhere in 2010  :shifty:

Step 4, 5 etc are a bit on the horizon and incl. us eventually getting 'charity status' and potential investors to promote

But hey, here's to another year of bustling activity on this little corner of the web :dopey:

Oh and Happy Birthday*, RatSkep! :pulp:

Cheers,
Bernhard/LIFE
