Want to write essays & articles?

#1  Postby LIFE » Jun 10, 2010 1:17 pm

We will have a section for articles soon.

You may or may not have noticed that we have a small Wiki running for testing purposes. I'm going to ditch this Wiki though, it's unintuitive and not really fit for our purpose. Instead we will have some kind of static site with collected articles.

What I have in mind:
Volunteers write articles that are written for a layman audience, so they'll generally be more accessible. Not too technical and in-depth but that shouldn't mean it couldn't be a bit more detailed here and there. I'd like the subjects of the articles to be tailored towards common misconceptions, such as

"Atheism is a religion"
"Evolution is just a theory"
"Science can't explain everything"

and so forth...

I'll make a list of what I can come up with soon, feel free to add subjects in this thread as well.

A member (or a team of members) writes an article on a specific subject, postes it to the forum for membership review (to point out any errors or for general feedback) and once final gets submitted to the database.

I'm thinking about some kind of reward, if you've got some suggestions tell me :dopey:
Also, the authors will of course get credit on the article page incl. a link to their website etc if they wish to, alternatively they can stay anonymous.

Who's generally interested in contributing an article?
Please tell me in this thread, also what subject you'd like to write on (or leave open if undecided).

So far:
natselrox "something on medicine"
mattwilson
Nora_Leonard "Fertile Minds"
Goldenmane "acupuncture"
Durro
Darwinsbulldog
MedGen

Any questions? Ask them here as well...

How about something on homeopathy? "Danges of homeopathy" or something? ;)
What common misconceptions are there regarding medicine?

The problem with arguing against Homeopathy is that you'll have to read at least one of their texts. And given the amount of bullshit, it might be quite a task to unlearn that! Ben Goldcare's book and the thread here provide enough arguments against Homeopathy.

It might be interesting to do a work on the efficiency or lack thereof regarding antidepressants. But that might not be the type of thing you're looking for. AIDS/Condom-Vatican, umm... No. Damn! Medicine is so boring!

I've been working for some time (on and off) on an article entitled "Fertile Minds" which is about Confucius and Hildegard of Bingen and why these two 'religious' figures appeal to me. I was meaning to post it here when I finished it, but it might be suitable for your purposes.

ETA: by 'here' I meant on the forum.

I would very much like to contribute, but I don't have any great knowledge to share. I'd have to be assigned a title to go away and research, and be given a very strict deadline.
I am so lazy, it would never get done otherwise.

Excellent idea, LIFE

I'm currently working on a quite specialized subject in literary studies, so I doubt I could contribute any useful stuff right now. I do have some ideas though which might be interesting for this forum. I could deal with some topics concerning language and narrative, or with certain myths such as the notion of cultural authenticity/purity. What do you think? :dunno:

I'd be happy to try my hand at writing something for the layperson's use.

Perhaps something on astrology, atheism, cold reading psychics or faith healing ?
I'll start believing in Astrology the day that all Sagittarians get hit by a bus, as predicted.

Medicine has quite a few misconceptions I think: people only use 10% of their brains, acupuncture works, chiropractic is a valid treatment, AIDS denialism, etc. Or if you wanted to stray away from the wooey stuff, you could discuss the lack of statistical knowledge in a lot of the medical field, what evidence based medicine is, or perhaps discuss some recent breakthroughs that explain some common beliefs about disorders: for example, broken heart syndrome is caused by a ballooning of the heart as a result of external stress and can be successfully treated, and it's not just an inevitable death because your loved one died.

:dunno: I'm sure you could write something interesting!
