But, as said, this specific effort is a bit more science-oriented than the majority of them.

I Think, they keep stumbling onto old ancient sites, want grants to fund their excavation so come up with the eternal "Atlantis myth".
That way, they can rev up the publics attention.

Doesn't India have a few sunken cities off the coast?

Yep, it is attached to myths too, near gujarat(arabian sea) is supposed to have been dwaraka- the citadel of Krishna himself. A sea gulped it down. In the south near Tamil Nadu (south-Indian ocean)a few ancient sites have been found.

Finally a few years back an ocean based scientific institute claimed to have discovered an ancient site again in arabian sea which is supposed to have been 9,500yrs old  . Even claimed to have sonar data which seems to reveal symmetric structures.
They were lambasted, by dept of Archeology, later claimed that their material was not good enough to count as evidence and the sonar is supposed to have been defective.
The last part I am not sure(could a defective sonar reveal symmetrical structures?).
So, yeah a lot of ancient sites. I am betting that either Greeks copied Indians or Indians copied greeks, there are too many similarities.
well, I have always felt that we are not limited by our compassion or by our passion or resources but by our economy.

But India also has a few real sunken cities that have been flooded only for a thousand or so years.

The city of Jericho dates back to ~10,000 years ago. If it was built on the coast instead, I'm sure it would be located a few miles out to sea.
