Khmer Kingdom

At its peak, in the late 12th Century, Angkor was a bustling metropolis covering 1,000 sq km. (It would be another 700 years before London reached a similar size.)

So exciting! This Indiana Jones type find is why I got into anthropology and archaeology in the first place! Wish I could be involved with the exploration! :)

Angkor never looked so good. The 'lazer mapping' has revealed a huge complex, I guess no one knew just how big this thing was. There could be untold treasures in there!

That is pretty darn amazing. A pretty staggering insight into exactly how well developed earlier civilisations were and how much we've fallen back as a species. Imagine what the world would be lack if the Khmer had been left to continue to develop their civilisation.

I was in the British Museum a while back, and was surprised to find the America bit is actually a very small proportion of the whole building. It is fascinating to realise that what we learn about is extremely biased to that we are already familiar with!

Brilliant.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

I have NO BELIEF in the existence of a God or gods. I do not have to offer evidence nor do I have to determine absence of evidence because I do not ASSERT that a God does or does not or gods do or do not exist.

Gah... what I wouldn't do for some quality television! Thai TV is FUCKING DIRE, so incredibly bad even describing it would make me cringe.

Angkor Wat Yields More Secrets

#15  Postby Calilasseia » Sep 23, 2014 8:20 pm

From the BBC ...

It took over a century of gruelling archaeological fieldwork to fill in the map. The lost city of Angkor slowly began to reappear, street by street. But even then significant blanks remained.

Then, last year, archaeologists announced a series of new discoveries - about Angkor, and an even older city hidden deep in the jungle beyond.

An international team, led by the University of Sydney's Dr Damian Evans, had mapped 370 sq km around Angkor in unprecedented detail - no mean feat given the density of the jungle and the prevalence of landmines from Cambodia's civil war. Yet the entire survey took less than two weeks.

Their secret?

Lidar - a sophisticated remote sensing technology that is revolutionising archaeology, especially in the tropics.

Mounted on a helicopter criss-crossing the countryside, the team's lidar device fired a million laser beams every four seconds through the jungle canopy, recording minute variations in ground surface topography.

See the full article for some amazing images of what the archaeologists found when they used Lidar to map the surroundings of Angkor Wat. The mapped area is at least 8 km square, which means that the ancient city of Angkor was comparable in size to numerous modern cities in the West.

It's perhaps telling that climate change did them in. Read on.
