NASA satellite 'helps find 17 Egypt pyramids'

Archaeologists have uncovered as many as 17 buried pyramids in Egypt with the help of NASA satellite imagery, according to a documentary to be aired by the BBC on Monday.

Led by US researcher Sarah Parcak at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the team has already confirmed two of the suspected pyramids through excavation work.

The BBC, which funded the research, released the findings this week ahead of a broadcast describing the technique and what was uncovered.

"I couldn't believe we could locate so many sites all over Egypt," Parcak was quoted as telling the BBC.

Cue various Murdoch journos railing against the BBC & this "waste of licence-fee payers' money"

Looks like a programme to be watching

It was already mentioned in the comments Bill.

Yes definitely watching. They must have known that they existed or was it just a hunch?

I think they were expecting to find stuff, but were surprised by how much stuff they did find. I wonder if this technique will show up any interesting finds elsewhere too.

Mhmm, I was also thinking of the China/Mongolia region as well. The Gobi might be hiding some cool shit too.
There's almost certainly a ton of undiscovered stuff hiden beneath the trees of central America too, but I don't know if this technique can work on jungles as well as it works on sand.

Ooh, another good interesting snippet from Trubble

I've put it on my Facebook page and I'll definitely watch it on Monday!

Sarah Parcak has become highly respected within the world of Egyptology. This is exciting stuff; the programme will be worth watching :)

I can imagine the technique finding some thing deep in a desert. The archeaologists get there and find a plinth inscribed with "I am Ozymandius, king of kings...".

If they point this satellite's cameras at Liberty University, could we find signs of intelligent life there?
