Interesting, because, some years ago, I formed a hypothesis (based on materials science) that rock stratum interfaces act as crack-stoppers during bolide impacts, causing craters to bottom out at such interfaces, especially when the lower layer was more refractory than the upper one. The only evidence I had at the time was one detailed photograph of the near side of the moon, one which seemed to indicate that there was much less variation in crater depth than in crater radius.
