It was exactly what gave Douglas Adams the idea for the story arc involving the cow's evolutionary cousin and the oft-cited floral arrangement that found a latter home in a certain member's regular output over the years...

I wonder if there's correlation between cow dung tossing and vaccine-shunning. The James Webb Telescope can't start producing data fast enough for this thread.

Looks like it’s on station al Sol-Earth L2! We didn’t shoot the damned thing off into outer space!

So, how fast (relative to earth's center of mass, I guess) was the telescope traveling when it entered the halo orbit? It turns out that it was about 200 meters per second, about the speed of a commercial airliner at economy cruise. The delta-v for the course correction was on the order of a meter per second or two.

Going with the bovine trending, let's term the station-keeping as a "cows célèbre". I am udderly pleased.

What will JWST see first?

Wiki:
HD 84406, is a star approximately 241 light-years away in the constellation of Ursa Major. The star is a spectral type G star and has a high proper motion. HD 84406 is the first star to be imaged by the James Webb Space Telescope.

In order to align its 18 mirrors, small adjustments to each segment will bring the 18 images of this star to sharp focus in the coming months as the instruments continue cooling to operating temperature...
... The cryocooler will cool MIRI to 6 kelvins in the following months.

First lights are in! The 18 images of the star (above) will be aligned gradually over the coming months. They cover an area smaller than the design anticipated and all is going better than expected so far...

Further reported progress:

First, the individual segment focus improves -

Next, the image stacking begins -

During this phase of alignment known as Image Stacking, individual segment images are moved so they fall precisely at the center of the field to produce one unified image instead of 18. In this image, all 18 segments are on top of each other. After future alignment steps, the image will be even sharper. Credit: NASA/STScI

The galaxy just below 10 o'clock is the only one catalogued with a red shift (all the other smudges are galaxies too) and that puts it about 4.3 billion light years distant. And there are months of tweaking to go yet...

James Webb Space Telescope completes another stage of instrument alignment
By Elizabeth Howell published 7 minutes ago

There's only one step left to tackle.

The commissioning stages of the James Webb Space Telescope just ticked off yet another phase.

Engineers have successfully aligned all but one of the instruments on the $10 billion space telescope for the first time, NASA reported on Friday (April 1) as Webb continues to cool to deep-space temperatures after launching Dec. 25, 2021.

The interim instrument adjustment was so successful that engineers determined they don't need to realign the secondary mirror of Webb, which was an option if they determined anything was out of line. One last phase of "multi-instrument alignment," as NASA terms the process, will place after the telescope's final instrument cools. The cooling milestone should happen in the "weeks ahead," the agency stated.
