Researchers have demonstrated a striking method to reconstruct words, based on the brain waves of patients thinking of those words.

The technique reported in PLoS Biology relies on gathering electrical signals directly from patients' brains.

Based on signals from listening patients, a computer model was used to reconstruct the sounds of words that patients were thinking of.

SPECT scan imaging from about 5 years ago showed people who heard voices had activity in the auditory center of the brain, but only on one side. It was fairly consistent among studied subjects who suffered from schizophrenia. If governments ever started abusing this kind of science to control the thoughts of people, I don't think people would even want to live any more.

Hardly.

It requires major brain surgery in order to plant the electrodes, and the subject has to consciously try to formulate the words in his head as though he was talking. It doesn't read your mind as in passive thoughts.

Remember how large computers used to be? Now we carry around tiny chips. Anything is possible.

Out of context I would applaud your optimism. In the context of this thread, however, I think you're going out of your way to find excuses to be paranoid. ;)

I'm not afraid of brain chips. I hope to wear one someday ...

Model A, memory aid
Model B, pain abatement
Model C, seizure control
Model D ... whatever you like...
