Has the evolutionary relationship to the ever-elusive Black Swans been traced out yet?

And I love this bit:

I saw my first black swan when I lived in Vancouver in the early 70's swimming in lost lagoon , and AFAIR there were always some there .

Are there black swans in the UK? I saw lots and lots of white ones there, not any black ones though.

Yup. Mostly (but not exclusively) in parks/formal gardens. Introduced from Oz as an 'ornamental' species.

Oh, don't forget the South American Black-necked Swan, which has a black head and neck and the rest white. The Australian Black Swan is more dark gray IMO. All other swan species are white, they mostly differ by bill color and voice and behavior.

Ok, I didn't see any there, so I wondered.

They're nowhere near as common as the native swans, but they're not exactly scarce either. It really depends where you are looking.

I was thrilled about seeing the ones I saw, at Holyrood, Wells and Windsor on the river at the parking lot. It's very exciting because they are extremely rare in SA, we only see them in zoos.
