Africa's elephants have reached a tipping point: more are being killed each year than are being born, a study suggests.
Researchers believe that since 2010 an average of nearly 35,000 elephants have been killed annually on the continent.
They warn that if the rate of poaching continues, the animals could be wiped out in 100 years.
The work is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Lead author George Wittemyer, from Colorado State University, said: "We are shredding the fabric of elephant society and exterminating populations across the continent."

Hell yes.
We seem to be an appallingly destructive species.
Most depressing.

Or rather we are the only ones with such destructive powers.

How about we put ivory (trade) on the same level as say drugs? I mean drugs kill people, but there seem to be enough.

This is so depressing. And infuriating.

I've had to stop reading articles about what's happening to elephants. They're too disturbing.
Let's try for peace in 2017, shall we?

Good.
20 mins and three people feel the same. Slight glimmer of hope.

None of us are likely to want to poach elephants, though.

I'd rather it would be as there is always(?) chance for change of mind, through dialog.

What's the economic condition of the poachers, out of curiosity?

The best gamekeeper is former poacher is one saying. On the other hand, as long as there will be demand there will probably be supply.

China announces ban on ivory trade by end of 2017

China will ban all domestic ivory trade and processing by the end of 2017, a move described by activists as a potential "game changer" for African elephants.

African ivory is highly sought after in China, where it is seen as a status symbol, and prices can reach as high as $1,100 a kg.

"China will gradually stop the processing and sales of ivories for commercial purposes by the end of 2017," the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday, citing a government statement.
