21. English Grammar: Your questions answered - Michael McCarthy
22. Look to Windward - Iain M Banks (re-read)
23. War against War - Ernst Friedrich
24. The Story of the Human Body - Daniel Lieberman
25. The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu - Dan Jurafsky
26. Grammars of Space: Explorations in Cognitive Diversity
27. An Utterly Exasperated History of Modern Britain, or...60 Years of making the same mistakes as always - John O'Farrel
28. The Kings of Albion - Julian Rathbone (re-read)
29. The Story of Your Life and Others - Ted Chiang
30. The Vanquished: Why the First World War Failed to End - Robert Gerwath
31. Soldier Spy - Tom Marcus
32. Direct and Indirect Speech (Trends in Linguistics: Studies and Monographs) - Florian Coulmas (Ed.)
33. Rethinking Linguistic Relativity (Studies in the Social and Cultural Foundations of Language) = John Gumperz & Steven Levinson (Eds.)

Nos 32 and 33 were really intense academic books. The Coulmas book looked at how reported speech is dealt with in a variety of languages. The distinction between 'John said "I'm going to Hawaii tomorrow."' and 'John said that he was going to go to Hawaii the next day."' is not always so clear cut in English. A lot of reports blend direct and indirect speech. Other languages deal with the issue in a variety of intriguing and often surprising ways.
The relativity book was right up my street. Looking at the vastly different ways that languages can chop up, compartmentalize and categorize reality is fascinating. Then you take a 'from the outside looking in' view of your own language (In my case English) and realize how strange and ad hoc the whole thing is.

One example that was illustrated nicely with diagrams was the ways in which English can use the phrasal verb 'put in' for 'He put the apple in the bowl' and 'He put the CD in the case'. Korean however has to use two separate verbs. One 'nehta' for 'put the apple in the bowl' (loose containment result) and another one 'Kkita' for 'put the CD in the case' (tight containment result). English pays no attention whatsoever to the tightness or looseness of the fit, but Korean does. (I've given a broad brush stroke account here, it's a bit more nuanced than this description.)
I love this kind of stuff and am always buttonholing people I meet at conferences to investigate how their language differs from English in its conceptualizations of reality.

Running away, go to it.
Where did you have in mind?
Have to take care.. .unless there's a 'where',
You'll only be wandering blind.
Just more questions... different kind.
Where are we to go? Where are we ever to go?
