51. Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North – Stuart Maconie

I read this book some years ago and found it really funny and stuffed with information I had no idea about and I’m a Manc. I’ve just given it to a scouser friend and hope to get some feedback soon.

Yeah, I found it very informative and funny. I'd recommend the other book on my list by the same author where he traces the route of the Jarrow crusade and gets a feel for the state of the nation in the age of Brexit and Austerity. I like his political outlook; his disdain for the identity politics, shallow moralizing and virtue signaling that now seems to overshadow so much of the left and his caustic scorn of the Conservatives and their self-serving, divisive and immoral policies.
I also like that he enjoys going to the pub and being sociable while pursuing moderate (and sometimes not so moderate) levels of intoxication. On top of it all, he is a bloody good writer!

It's one thing managing the consumption of your sunday roast so your final mouthful contains several elements, but to finish book 50 at 5:50 on 31/12...words fail
Arthur : All my life I've had this strange feeling that there's something big and sinister going on in the world. Slartibartfast : No, that's perfectly normal paranoia.
