Isn't it just? (sorry Fallible!)

I also agree that Animal Farm and 1984 are essential.

I second Of Mice and Men, Crime and Punishment, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Nausea...

I recommend a couple of short stories, The Tell Tale Heart and Repent Harlequin, Said the Ticktockman.
Novels (apart from those already mentioned); The Remains of the Day, The Road, and Darkness at Noon.

I suspect you are feeling overloaded!

I'll never hear the end of this Great Gatsby thing now. :nono:

And how could I forget The Road?
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

I was going to recommend the book, "Reading for Dummies", but you won't be able to understand the symbols.

I have a few recommendations, but I'd like to know what topics interest you, Naut, before I go listing off a bunch. I'm going to put in with Fallible and say that The Great Gatsby is actually quite good: it's got a lot of America in it and I just recall being impressed by the maturity of Fitzgerald's narration. It's probably not helped that it gets forced on young readers studying English.

You would. :snooty:

Edit: although if you dislike it, Naut probably will. Like it, I mean.

Nah, I'm only messing. I've never read it or even know what it's about. Though I did see the trailer and I know chuff when I see it.

Lana Del Rey did the song. I didn't enjoy it. There's that line near the beginning where she talks about being "forever wild" and captures quite a lovely bit of giddiness found in the age and the book, but after that it's rather colourless.

Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual - Nigel Calder
Piloting and Seamanship - Chapman
Marine Diesel Manual - Nigel Calder

That's what's on my bedside table at the moment. Really riveting stuff, keeps you awake. Particularly the chapters about diesel injection pumps and the use of springlines when docking a single screw boat in a crosswind.

I love John Steinbeck. I have read all his books. I always have a couple on my phone.

A very funny book is from Jonas Jonasson; 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared.

My impassioned cry of "total waste of paper!" trumps your damning with faint praise "quite good".

I suspect Fallible realises her mistake and is hiding under her bed in a foetal position wondering how she typed 'Great Gatsby' instead of 'The Road'. The shame of it....
