We are alive, so the universe must be said to be alive. We are its consciousness as well as our own. We rise out of the cosmos and see its mesh of patterns, and it strikes us as beautiful. And that feeling is the most important thing in all the universe.

That is so very sad. His work gave so much pleasure to so many people. My thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.

Here's to the man!

I remember being switched onto him by a friend who recommended 'The Wasp Factory' way back in the 90's and have been a fan since. Although, I've never read any of his 'M' novels.

The Wasp Factory was stunning. I also loved The Bridge. Many on here will have loved the 'M' works, I know.

The Player of Games was my favourite of his "M" novels, although I haven't read many of them.. yet. And, yes, I found The Wasp Factory a very gripping read, with nice touches of dark humor. A talented writer with a lot of imagination.

:nono: Very sad. The Wasp Factory, The Bridge, The Crow Road, Complicity, Espedair Street, Transition...and that's only the Iain Banks books I've read and enjoyed. Savour them, won't get any more.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

So sad. I liked The Times O. 'Scotland has lost two of its best writers', a ref. to the 'M'. He also proposed to his wife this year with the words 'Would you do me the honour of being my widow?' :waah:
The slap in the face that is offered by anti-rationalist, pseudo-scientists and anti-intellectuals that infest much of public discourse is a sad coda to what has been achieved these centuries past by the scientific method - don’t get me started

BBC2 showing a interview with Iain Banks now, with Kirsty Wark.

I ordered the Hydrogen Sonata last week. It was the only Banks book I didn't have (not including the up-coming last book), and I'd only put off buying that because I couldn't decide on whether to go eBook or not. I went for the hardcover in the end - it will mark the point where I give up paper books and go digital. The end of an era in more than one respect.
