I'm about 30% in, so I'm not reading any of these posts yet. So far I'm really enjoying it though.

Everything relevant to the content has been diligently spoilered, so you're safe to read the thread if you want!

Glad you're enjoying it. (I enjoyed writing it.)

OK, I read this last weekend. I loved the writing. But I usually like more action stuff. Or clever science. And yet I really enjoyed this book - I missed the catch at the end, almost. Went over my head till I read the thread. Why? I don't really care about that stuff. I don't pay attention to it in RW so I don't pay attention to it in fiction. I was left pondering if there had been a set up for a sequel.

I would most definitely like to read your next book. You absolutely have the stuff to write well. And huge credit for whomever did the editing - it is rare to read a kindle book that isn't loaded with typos and sentences that have only been half edited.

I am curious if you have written anything else available online? I am more curious how your writing might develop. That interests me more than anything. You have a very smooth style that just flows so easily, it is wonderful.

That's quite a compliment, Steve, for someone who prefers action novels to say he enjoyed this one. Apparently I'm doing something right! I'm aiming to be the Jane Austen of science fiction.

Not really, I've only just thought of it.

I thought vaguely at one point about whether a sequel would be a good idea; but I feel that I have said all that I want to about these characters. With the possible exception of Beate.

It did occur to me that I could possibly use this novel if I were to write a popular science book. The conceit would be to have Selena explaining the science to Chiara, when she is a bit older than in this book, and we could have a bit of banter and other interaction to loosen it up a little. It wouldn’t be exotic, cutting-edge stuff, because that’s not what I know about. Normal undergraduate physics: the kind of stuff I post about from time to time in the physics forum here (which is my only other writing that is available online!).

But my next novel (which is now finished, bar some final editing, and I’m considering what to do with it) is not a sequel and has nothing to do with this one, other than being, like this one, the kind of science fiction that Jane Austen might like. It has less sex, less science and no children; but like Pale Glint it’s about the relationships more than the action.

The editing, by the way, was all me. Speaking of editing, it’s “for whoever did the editing”, because “whoever” is the subject of “did”. I’m probably quite annoying to live with.

Thanks very much for your praise!

I'll be sure to post an amazon review once I read it. Don't hold your breath though, as I don't have the time to read a lot at the moment.

Btw: How do you motivate yourself to keep writing. I'd love to write a book some day and I think I've got some good ideas, but every attempt so far failed for a lack of motivation :/

I read some sound advice a long time ago, which is summed up in the tag "nulla dies sine linea". I have a regular slot every day where I force myself to sit down and write a certain target amount. My own personal target is 500 words, because I find it's long enough not to make the prose bitty, and short enough not to run out of imagination. Other people will find different lengths suitable. If I reach the target and am still going, I stop anyway, so that I can easily pick it up and hit the ground running next day. This way the story takes shape gradually, you're conscious of how it's growing and don't get frustrated.

I do take breaks sometimes, dictated by external events: school holidays, for instance. But they are planned, they don't last very long, and I use them to regenerate my imagination.

A review on Amazon would be greatly appreciated!

Still haven't got around to even starting it. Sorry, Ev.

I do solemnly promise to get on it ASAP, though.

Sounds like a plan. Maybe I'll try that. There's still an interesting mixture of sci-fi and high fantasy on my mind that I'd really love to write down. Maybe I'll try and write a target amount of word every evening on my balcony with a nice cup of tea or something.

Actually no.

Part of designing is having an idea/a vision and yours was really good :)

Your advice on writing actually seems to work. I wrote a chapter yesterday with a 500 words goal (I found a software that supports tracking goals). Let's see if I can keep it up :)

Obviously. I'm going to need more than 500 words to make it worth stealing.

You're not reading anything by Scar until you've finished Pale glint of the Sun, Maz.

Honestly, young people today.

:o :waah:

OK. How about I promise to bump it up a couple of places on the list and get to it right after my current book and one I have to do for Uni?

Fine, but I'm warning you, it may well come up in our end-of-term test.
