The first "children's" book by yours truly - Gobla's Den

#1  Postby Keep It Real » May 05, 2018 9:52 am

I made this around 12 years ago and as am now interested in making children's books again I got the folder out and did a re-read. It makes so much more sense to me now, and although it is dubtless a bit creepy in a way (it was inspired by a particularly weird dream) I remember it did make my friend who read it at the time wet herself a bit she laughed so much! Hopefully it will brighten somebody's day here too. KIR

I like the story. I would also say that the vegetables are particularly well drawn.

Wait, so this is a children's book about a guy who lives in a hole and interferes with kids?
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

I'm not criticising, it's hilarious. But what baby/kid gets handcuffed and sent to prison for meddling with people playing?

What anthropomorphic organism has 25 foot long boneless arms? I kinda like the idea of reppin' the criminal justice system anyway, and I don't think the story would really work if gobla were just sent to the naughty step for 10 mins lolz glad it gives you a giggle fal

I consider this basically tons of positive feedback and am ready to crack on with the next one, tentatively entitled Swish Fish

I seem to remember from developmental psychology that young children often draw people in that way, ie a face with arms and legs sticking out of it. Then of course there's this fellow:

In the dream which inspired the story and images, I only remember one mental image, and that was of "Gobla" sitting in his underground Hobbit hole with his arms coiled like a long length of rope. Perhaps it was a throwback to early childhood visualisations of people because he defo had that Humpty Dumpty look, but another thought occured to me today: that perhaps that dream was partially formed by a scene from one of my very favourite films: (From around 1 minute in - soz couldn't find the clip in English)

As long as I don't attempt to create a "prototype" and then "deploy" by "dropping it" in different "localities" with the aim of "modifying memetic architecture" I think I'll probably be OK with this new project

Cool art! Why is it called Gobla's Den, though? The den is sorta incidental to the story. Also, while the scaffolding stuff on the title page looks cool, I'm not sure why it was chosen.

Cheers dude! It's called Gobla's Den because it's really about Gobla getting out of the house and facing up to the real world I reckon. Also in the dream he (I?) was very much in the Hobbit hole. Dunno why I chose girders for the title page...hmmmmmmmmmm...nope, no eye dear
