It's interesting. Maybe that area was called Escambia before the state lines were drawn up?
Maine's state route 11 ends at the New Hampshire border, where it becomes N.H. state route 11.
Maine has 2 Sugarloaf's, 2 Frenchville's (both in the same county, one is a section of Ashland with a "welcome to Frenchville" sign, and the other is it's own town.) Multiple Long, Crystal, and Grand Lakes, 2 Grand Pitch's (waterfalls) within a couple miles of each other. Plus probably many other repeats that I don't know about yet. :)

Did they have trouble with orientation? I mean maybe someone was told there are falls nearby called Grand Pitch's and when he came to waterfall he thought this must be the Grand Pitch's and called it that. Maps were not too great in those days and there was not probably many around to correct it. It has happened in Europe in the lease densely areas. Most mistakes have been corrected though.

Do provide a quote, rather than an assertion.

Do realise this discussion is about a joking remark, not scientific claim.

So you can't support your assertion. Gotcha.

FFS, it was a joke that prompted the question and I was just giving my preference for the Greek and Norse mythos over that of the Christians. :picard:

I did a bit of research on why there are two Escambia counties, but no real explanation. The first two counties in Florida were Escambia and St. John's, created and named when the U.S. bought East and West Florida from Spain in 1821. There were only two counties that covered the entire state, the border between them was the Suwannee river. The Panhandle and Big Bend areas were Escambia, and the rest of the state from Jacksonville to the Keys was St. John's. These were broken up into multiple counties over time.

Escambia County Alabama was only created after the Civil War, in 1868, from parts of Conecuh and Baldwin counties. "Escambia" is derived from either the Creek word "shambia", meaning "clear water", or from the Choctaw word for "cane brake" or reed brake". In any case, Florida did it first, so neener neener Alabama.

So I'm no wiser about why there are two identically named counties that border each other in two states, but I learned some interesting shit anyways.

Here's some dictionary definitions of 'preference':

1.
the act of preferring.
2.
the state of being preferred.
3.
that which is preferred; choice:
His preference is vanilla, not chocolate.
4.
a practical advantage given to one over others.
5.
a prior right or claim, as to payment of dividends or to assets upon dissolution.
6.
the favoring of one country or group of countries by granting special advantages over others in international trade.

Please tell me which definition you have in mind, then support your assertion that you gave your 'preference'. My preference is that you do this with quotes.

That's possible. The 2 waterfalls are on 2 different rivers, and one rivers flows into the other.

Is Hesiod's Theogony good enough for you?

I can also link to the original Greek if you wish.

You posted dictionary definitions. You did not demonstrate how those refute what I said.
Also, checked the field, still barren.
