WTF. Any opportunity to moralize I suppose. For what it's worth, BMI is not a protected class. (Hell, it's not even medically justified). Businesses are generally free to refuse service to anyone for any reason except for those reasons that are proscribed by law. Even so, as if fat-shaming weren't enough, this jack-ass had to go that one step further and play the righteous card.

In this case, I am hoping market forces will stamp out this business.

ETA: is there no deed so vile and abhorrent that religion can't make worse?

People have the right to ruin their business be refusing to serve.

Btw, what kind of idiot would refuse people that will pay not to use the service??

So you think it should be legal for people to have an open "No blacks served" policy. How quaint

As usual, you forget/ignore the years of struggle that made policies like "No blacks served" socially unacceptable, LONG after it was made illegal.

Btw, what kind of idiot would refuse people that will pay not to use the service??

He clearly believes he's doing the right thing, and must be doing well enough that it's more worthwhile to cater to his preferred patrons than it is to take money from people he doesn't want to show up in his gym.

So much for your "ruin their business by refusing to serve" theory.

Unfortunately, the only recourse is to hope that he does ruin his business for refusing to server, because there is no law preventing discrimination based on BMI.

Well if it is a gym just for "the beautiful people" and they find the sight of every day folk trying to get fit upsetting, then he's probably already got a secure user base of vain airheads.

And here was me thinking that "Global Gym" from dodgeball was a work of fiction..... :(

Wow! The Bible was very specific on the BMI apparently.

Most gym owners I'm aware of in the UK would take one look at this, and assume [1] this individual is doing this as a satirical move, aimed at highlighting the absurdity of the new crop of "religious freedom" laws, or [2] this individual is in need of imminent psychiatric hospitalisation, with respect to the way his business will tank. Unfortunately I don't have enough information present to allow me happily to settle upon [1] rather than [2] as the reason for this.

What happens when it's the religious belief of the patron that God has commanded that they should get in shape by going to the gym? I'd bet that I could do some biblical cherry picking to support that claim.

Can a restaurant force the wearing of a tie?

They used to do so, and some restaurants kept ties and jackets for any gentlemen who were temporarily sartorially embarrassed.

Some gentleman's clubs in London still do this. Needless to say, the top of the list for this is the snooty Carlton Club, the place where chinless aristo Tories go to inebriate themselves out of sight of the cameras.

I suspect a parody....

I can't find this 'Centennial Daily' paper anywhere online and a few google searches on the particulars of the story come up with nothing.

Use your skepticism about sources as much as information presented...

Even so, BMI is a notoriously bad indicator for obesity.

Why should there be a law against discrimination on any grounds?
It is private property, surely the owner can decide whether they don't want someone on their property?

A gym is unique in that it is open to members, not open to the general public.

Must be a fake-- there's no such paper. It would be in Centennial, Colorado (just south of Denver), near Lone Tree. This has been pointed out on Reddit too, which I'm guessing was the source.
