Hawaii icon produces myrrh; considered a miracle

#1  Postby DoctorE » Nov 28, 2013 9:11 am

... unfakeable
HONOLULU —You would never think a tiny parish in the heart of Kaka'ako would house such a secret. But, its existence is well-known to those in the Russian Orthodox faith.

An image of the Virgin Mary produces myrrh. There's no explanation for it. Yet, for those who believe -- it's a miracle.

"It's made us, perhaps, more humble towards God and the church," said parishioner Coco Wiel. "We've started to realize we have a much bigger responsibility to take care of the parish."

It's known as the Iveron Icon of the Holy Theotokos. But, to parishioners, it's simply a miracle.

It's an image of the Mother Mary and Christ child that, for reasons unexplainable, produces myrrh. Small drops that smell like roses.

"Drops that appear like dew, like dew on grass," said Father Antole Lyovin of the Holy Theotokos of Iveron Russian Orthodox Church. "A drop appears here, a drop appears there. And it starts flowing down. So, how can you fake that?"

The icon is actually a smaller reproduction of the original that resides in Greece. It, too, streams myrrh.

How can you fake it? Rather easily I think, it isn't like bleeding statues or weeping statues haven't been faked before. Personal incredulity can be rather strong in ignoring reality at times it seems.

It'd be a miracle if these idols would bleed something useful - money perhaps, or ketchup.

Money, money, money.

Oh dear, what a cheesy magic trick. As you can see below, the icon is kept in a case with a bunch of cotton balls behind it. Once in a while, the case is opened and myrrh is squeezed from the cotton. Of course, the myrrh must have come from the icon. :wall:

What the hell is Myrr. Frankenstein and Myhrr? Wasn't that in a Dr. Seuss book?

Pretty much, but not as well written. By a long shot.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

Gold, Frankenstein & Myrrh. An accountancy firm, obviously.

Myrrh is the resin gathered from the bark of a tree native to Arabia. As an antiseptic, you might find it in your toothpaste.
