Teen Girl Abused by Christians

A brave young girl named Jessica in Rhode Island, USA, is enduring a campaign of hatred, abuse and threats of physical violence after successfully having a prayer banner removed from public display in her school, in line with separation of church and state laws in the USA.

So much for Christian love and tolerance...

Jesus said:

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."

Paul clarifies:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Jesus declares:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

James edifies:

"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."

Not to play the no true Scotsman card here, but clearly some people, these "Christians," need to read the Bible :nono:

Jesus Christ. They're just dumb teenagers. No need to get so heavy on them.

There is also this, but in just a few years of those teenagers they will be able to vote, drive, and pass off as an adult, if they are just dumb teenagers I worry about the next generation of adults.

People always worry about the next generation and have been since ancient times. Including Aristotle. Don't sweat it. Dumb kids don't always make dumb adults and I wouldn't worry about them having a vote most won't until they're older anyway :smoke:

The Bible IS the problem. These Christians do not need to read their BIbles. They need to abandon their assurance of eternal judgment. They are angry because they feel that reinforcement of "The Awareness of God" will help to safeguard the souls of their children who attend school. To secularize the school envrironment represents a threat to the well-being of the childrens' eternal souls. People who believe in everlasting rewards and punishments cannot moderate their impulses nor stop the emotional downward spiral that sends them over the rails.

They have no problem at all causing children to lie awake at night worrying about hell. I get easily bored with legal cases involving religion, so I am thankful for secularists that pursue them.

If the Church was still in its ascendancy, the question would not be, "Should we take down the prayer banner?" The question would be, "Should those who refuse tp pray be imprisoned, tortured, or executed?"

I agree with you Wilhud - they seemed to have missed the point about love, forgiveness and tolerance which appears in (some parts of) the Bible.

Yes, they're teenagers Ani, but at around 16 to 17, they're nearly adults and surely aren't just parroting phrases learned from adults like a pre-teen might. These are young adults to pre-adults and are at the stage of their lives where they can and should take responsibility for their actions.

I think that the campaign of abuse and threats is disgraceful.

This is probably where the local preacher needs to step in and give them a lesson. That's if he's not the one who poisoned them in the first place blasting his opinions on this case since it first came up.

That is one fucking brave young lady. But the fact that her teachers, school board etc could not get past their religion and realise the value of the establishment cluase suggests that she will never be treated fairly in her exams and other assessments there. In the press conf she didn't say she would be going back to that school, and it would probably be a wise move not to return. As Durro said, it's probably not the kids fault, as they are just parrotting the "adults"-who should know better.

I know one thing, if she ever applies to law school, she will get a place.

Heres a little extra information on her and the controversy.

Her lecture at last year's SSA conference. She seems like a very determined and confident young lady:

Here are a number of screenshots of people's bigotry:

People have started a college scholarship for Jessica, if you feel the need to show your support for her future endevours there are details here:

Reading the bible is why they are acting in this fashion. Do you think they would be acting like this if they hadn't read the bible?
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

I'll partially agree with this. While one can find and support about any kind of bigotry from the bible depending on reading, interpretation, etc, I'd wager that they are acting like this not because they actually read the thing, but because this is how they were raised to behave and believe by their parents, preachers, etc.

I certainly don't disagree, just making the point that reading the bible is not the point, interpreting it is. All this can be avoided if you simply don't read the useless crap in the first place.

I grew up reading the Bible, and had parents who taught me morals from the Bible. I NEVER acted bigoted towards anyone of a different opinion of me. Too me this is an example of being taught wrong by parents and by the church and one of the missions I had for the church while I was studying to become a pastor and break the yoke of assoc. pastor. I desperately wanted the church to teach acceptance of others and teach how to be nonjudgemental. The ultimately law of the Bible for me was Love. Love God. Love your Neighbour as you would love yourself. God didn't say Love your neighbour unless he/she was black, atheist, gay, buddhist, jew, etc. It says flat out love.

Bullshit! I did not behave in such a disgusting manner when I was a teen. :yuk: They need to know that their behavior is not acceptable and wont be tolerated. Some of them are actually threatening to hurt the girl; and some of them are one physical line away from being in a juvenile court room.

Like the girl that made this comment-
“if I wasn’t 18 and wouldn’t go to jail I’d beat the shit out of her idk how she got away with not getting beat up yet”

She seems to suffer from the delusion that if she was still a minor, that she'd be able to get away from hurting another person. Never mind the fact that she could face time in a juvenile prison. :nono: Though I can't help but think that the only reason she (and so many others) suffer this delusion is because they ARE allowed to get away with it (no one calls the police during an attack, or presses chargers for example). Peer pressure plays a big part.

/endrant that's not actually directed at Animavore.

You might have grown up reading the bible but you didn't have parents who taught you morals from the bible. Your parents taught you their morals, not biblical morals. These children are acting out perfectly acceptable biblical morals if you choose to interpret the bible how they do. Their parents, unlike yours, have chosen different morals to teach their children.

My point stands, if they hadn't read the bible they wouldn't be acting like this.
