Bravo that man. Though sadly it won't have any measurable effect upon rich American fundies.

Trouble is, this God character does have form with regards to homophobia. It doesn't like the gays. So what is Desmond to do? Abandon Christianity & declare that God is wrong, or explain away the divine homophobia & just carry on being a Christian?

I mean, if he carries on with the Christian worship stuff, he gets into heaven, irrespective of God being a homophobic bigot. He needs to draw God out into the open on this matter. God needs to front up & declare his stance vis a vis homosexuality. That way, Desmond can either tell a homophobic God to sod off, or God can tell the homophobes to do so.

So come on God, where are you?

According to? A strict and narrow, almost fundamentalist interpretation of a select amount of Scriptures? Liberal theologians have addressed the issue of "anti-gay" passages in the Bible.

Nope, but it will have effect on laypeople when they see that not all high profile Christians are against gays.

The article fell short when they said the documentary reinterpreted the Bible.

Yup. It's not as monolithic as you might think. My background is European catholic: the acceptance of contraception and even (!) of abortion among nice catholic ladies is far greater than the official line would have you believe. Same thing.

Well the god of the bible doesn't like lots of things that you don't see laws, demonstrations, violence and mass injustices about. The huge increase in homophobia in Africa is driven by fundies from America and the Middle East, and it's good to see a prominent African religious leader position himself in opposition to that.

he should do what people have done in the past when they don't agree with the standard 'god' position - invent a new god.

Far too radical. All we need to do is have another reformation. :)

Apparently thepope has just made a statement that gay people shouldvnot be judged it mistreated. Not taking his word for it though untilthe catholic church stops backing Prop 8 like initiatives and groups and.discriminating against gay people.

Also, more OT, Tutu has made this point before inthe documentary "for the bible tells me so":
"Respect for personal beliefs = "I am going to tell you all what I think of YOU, but don't dare retort and tell what you think of ME because...it's my personal belief". Hmm. A bully's charter and no mistake."

That's probably just the usual "hate the sin, not the sinner" claptrap. Getting their heads around the idea that homosexuality might not actually be a sin at all takes a little more effort.
