I've been discussing this with my rather idiotic friend as of late. He seems convinced that the first moon landing was faked and directed by Stanley Kubrick in the desert. Honestly. :sigh:

Otherwise an intelligent chap.

I sent him this link as well, a piece by Michael Shermer on the subject.

I loved this part;

I once asked G. Gordon Liddy (who should know) about conspiracy theories. He said three people can keep a secret as long as two of them are dead. To think that thousands of people would keep their mouths shut is too ridiculous to consider.

I having been waiting for this topic to come up ever since i saw a conspiracy theory section appear. It was the first conspiracy theory i sank my teeth into unravelling just why it was ludicrous.

A great site for debunking the insanity that is the 'Apollo Hoax' is: http://www.clavius.org

The guy who runs it is very very knowledgable on the subject and has appeared in several Apollo related documentaries as a technical adviser or other similar capacities.

The site also has a forum attached which again is full of a lot of people who work in aerospace and similar fields who actually know what they are on about. Hoax believers used to get regularly mulched on those boards.

No one considers this though do they, the thousands of employees who would need to keep shut about the moon landing for sixty odd years. They can't even keep their traps shut about the damn aliens.

It's not just the thousands of technicians etc, its the Russians you have to convince too, I'm sure their spies would of been all over this.

It would probably cost more and be more technically difficult to fake and cover it up than to actually put a man on the moon. Let alone do it several times more.

I used to work with a guy who believed the conspiracy theories about Apollo 11 but not the rest. He claimed, in all seriousness, that the 1st landing was hoaxed but all the rest were real. It's hard to know what to say when encountering idiocy so pronounced (other than this, and his fundamentalist christianity, he was a really clever guy).

This is EXACTLY the position that my friend holds. Basically they had to fake the first to beat the Soviets.

Yeah well that's a different argument, but still pretty stupid.

You don't often see fundamentalist Christianity and the word clever in the same sentence.

One of the biggest problems with his argument is one you've already raised - the Russians. It is utterly implausible that the Russians would have kept quiet about a faked landing had they known about it, and they were monitoring the mission closely, along with astronomers around the world. It's just too stupid for words.

You don't often see fundamentalist Christianity and the word clever in the same sentence.

Yeah. He was fantastic at maths, and was great with computer programming and general problem solving and argument but believed in Adam & Eve, the Noachian flood and all the rest of that lunacy. Very, very strange chap.

When you consider ALL the things that would have had to have been faked - including having a spacecraft travelling on the correct orbit to provide a radio transmission source, and a way to gather samples to bring back for independent scientists to examine - it would be easier to send men to the Moon than to fake it.

You know, I just watched the Mythbuster's Moon Landing special yesterday and given the overwhelming evidence, I find it weird that anybody still thinks this conspiracy theory is valid.

I remember talking to my mother once. She immediately said, yes, her Uncle didn't believe anyone landed on the Moon at first, but when he saw the television announcing it, he was convinced. Then I said, "No, I'm talking about people who still don't believe the moon landings happened. Right now. There are still people who do not believe the moon landings happened." You know what her response was?

"Don't talk to them. They're crazy."

They found alien life on the moon!!!11!! w00t
As I pointed the gun at the baby, I decided to add to the dramatic atmosphere.

It must be getting crammed on that dark side of the moon what with all those Transformers, Reptilian Overlords and Nazi Moon Bases up there.

I wonder if they all get along?

Look at the Apollo 11 footage and then go and watch Logan's Run. Case closed.
