Well said. This is how the experts were treated in Nazi Germany. All expertise was rendered automatically suspect. It's the mentality of the high-school bully -- which is what Trump has always been. He is not the cause of this delusional anti-education online culture. But he is most certainly its most visible and deadly symptom.

It's only a small step from him to the book-burners, with the Kool-Aid drinking mythers striking the first match.

Congratulations. You now have your own alpha male in the White House. He's already kidnapped two thousand children. But you and I know we ain't seen nothing yet. So welcome to your funhouse AmurriKKKa, where anything is possible, including book-burning.

Mark my words: The time will come when the mythers will render life impossible for all serious secular professional academic historians in the brick-and-mortar world, just as Trump has removed everyone from EPA who takes climate change seriously. These secular historians first had to find a spine and buck the fundamentalist churches in pursuing their scholarship. But now other Kool-Aid drinkers, instead of admiring the gutsiness of unashamed agnostics like Ehrman, will give these scholars just as much hell as the churches gave a previous generation. Proud of yourselves yet?

The delusional online community, dancing on the graves of those who tried to advance knowledge in the teeth of a delusional age, now advance demented delusions of their own. Trump is just the tip of the iceberg. More and more resentful people, resentful at the hard work it takes to become a specialist in anything, will gain more and more power, thanks to the lies that Facebook and all the fora generate. This Yahoo story is only the first salvo. Soon childhood mortality will be as rampant as in the poorest Third-World country. Vaccinations will be forbidden, along with higher learning, especially history.

The old saying actually has it wrong. Look at the repeated airbrushing out of figure after figure in Stalinist Russia. It's not that those ignorant of history are condemned to repeat it. It's that those ignorant of history are condemned to invent it -- and the people will lick up that diarrheic invention like the most savory ice cream.

Have a nice day,

Stein

I can't have a nice day. How am I going to have a nice day after that? I'm going to have to spend the rest of the week fortifying my house, stockpiling food and digging an underground shelter. I must admit, I had no idea that not believing Jesus existed was that serious a threat. Eek.

Want to take bets on how long these anti-crank posts will stay up? By the way, I've since learned what "prevaricate" really means. I did use it correctly lo these many moons ago after all. It means to be evasive and to distract, not to lie. So the moderation was ignorant and wrong. I did not accuse the poster of lying; I used "prevaricate" correctly to describe the poster as evasive and full of gaslighting -- which mythers are.

During the McCarthy era, my parents decided to hide some of their history books -- true story. You don't have to stockpile food, etc. But you do have to give serious thought to hiding some of your books.

It's all about the upside, isn't it?

Nobody has to hide his math books, because there's no upside to burning those. They tried burning the Alexandria library, but people just figured out the same math all over again. If you could do math instead of history, you'd probably understand why.

Same thing with history, except somebody's afraid it won't come out right if there's a do-over. The proof is in the pud-knocking.

A question: Why is it you seem so shy of actually addressing the topic in preference to dragging in all kinds of irrelevant material about Trump and vaccinations?

I'm guessing Justin Martyr had no more idea about either than he had about the Testimonium Flavianum, as none of them existed at the time he was writing.

It's trendy now to use Trump and anti-vaxxers as convenient bogeymen to dredge up in this thread, and a few years ago it would be trying to associate this with Communism, and a few years before that witches and devil worship, and in ancient times possession by evil spirits.

You need a new schtick, as anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together can see right through it.

They probably want my Anarchist's Cookbook, Das Kapital, and Mein Kampf too. Fuck 'em. And they best keep their mitts off my vintage VHS Debbie Does Dallas.

Maybe because I've ALREADY addressed every damn point in this discussion ten times over --

Historical Jesus

-- something which you KNOW DAMN WELL and repeatedly ignore over and over and over again year after year after year. Of course, IGNORING the submission of data again and again and again is the surest mark of both a Trumpster and a troll.

So have a nice day.

As you should probably know the discussion that triggered your outburst concerned something a scholar noticed about Justin Martyr's work.

You ignored that relevant submission to post your rant about 21st century doings in a zany attempt to derail the thread.

By your own definition that would mark you as "both a ______ and a ____".

The definition may also include make believers that come to the same conclusion and act they just found some spark brand of wisdom when in reality they made those things up to keep on believe making.
