Peacock. Get it right!

Melek Taus (Tawûsê Melek) is my favourite demiurge. How can you not love someone whose tears quenched Hell's flames? And anyway, Melek Taus is the most beautiful peacock of them all.

I hate peacocks. Noisy, filthy bastards. But apparently tasty if correctly prepared.

They are quiet for most of the year, and it's only the males that honk occasionally during the mating season. Compared to parrots they are actually very quiet. As for filth, they are no dirtier than any other bird of comparable size.

The guy across the street in Mbabane is a good buddy of the King, who gave him a bunch of peacocks. They perch on our roof and shit all over the show. It's mating season now, so they'll be squawking. It's actually illegal to keep peacocks within city limits, but Buddy of the King goes a long way. On the plus side, he's got mega armed security, keeps the riff-raff off the street.

'Tis OK. My brother in law had two peacocks. Even at close range they were no great shakes. My pet galah, on the other hand, had my ears ringing for several minutes with a single scream. She had a jealous fit because I ignored her while telling my mother a dirty joke I heard earlier that day at school. And galahs are noisy any time of the year, particularly when there are anywhere between a dozen and a few thousand wheeling around above your house. They also make the roof look quite dappled with their shit as they do their wheeling thing. If you don't hose the shit off before it dries it'll stay there for months. It's also a good idea to stay under the cover of the verandah if you insist on staying outside at all.

Oh, and have I told you about the cockatoos? Two to four times larger, noisier and messier than galahs, plus given the slightest chance they'll bite your furniture to matchstick sized pieces.

Gimme a couple of dozen peacocks any time. They really are rather laid back. Honk honk.

:eager:
That's a lot of cocks in one place. I didn't know they were such good fliers, I've probably never seen one fly. Perhaps less noisy but similar vocalizations to sea gulls. I was even more surprised at hearing the unmistakable calls of a black-capped chickadee starting at 7:09. The one that sounds like that Simpsons "ha-ha" meme. Those cute little guys are natie to my part of the world. Perhaps then, it's a willow tit. First I heard of them. :dopey:

Good 'ol Kent Hovind. That jackass is still alive? Doctor Motherfuckin' Dino. Speaking of creationist boneheads, I wonder what that Ken Ham feller is up to... I used to confuse those two with one another...

On the subject of cockatoos ... the one to avoid if you don't like noise, is the Moluccan Cockatoo. That bird can hit 135 decibels when it's pissed off enough, and screeches at this volume if it goes neurotic.

You sure they're not peasants? According to my reading they make a fearsome racket and get up to all sorts of mischief when they are hungry. Lovely tail feathers mind you, apparently you can catch fish with them.

The galah is one of the 21 cockatoo species. It may not be as loud as its white-feathered relations, but it's very demanding. If it feels ignored it gets quite noisy. The one I had was basically relatively quiet when it sat on my shoulder, but even then I had to periodically give it neck scritches in order to stop it from nipping my earlobe. It was also quiet when I played my guitar (very badly, of course) Then it would help me pluck the strings while softly singing along (totally out of tune) and dancing from foot to foot on the guitar's neck. Fortunately it also remained very quiet overnight, especially when its cage was covered with a big towel.

The video below does not really reflect the actual noise level (you'll never get to the ears ringing stage listening to a Youtube clip via an ordinary stereo system, let alone the average computer speaker), but gives a good account of what a single galah sounds like.
