I saw here that there was some dispute as to whether Tipler had gone creationist-wacky and that the believer disputing it naturally argued against every source the man has put his name to if it wasn't a direct quote.

There's nothing there that shows Tipler has joined the ID crowd. I can't find anything on-line to support this, though he is certainly being accused of being an IDist "at heart" (though again without reference to any quotes from Tipler that I can find).

I get bored easy, so I spent some time looking for quotable material from the fellow himself. He seems to write at PJ Media, so that may be of use. But I found Tipler's paper on peer review, that he published in the ID creationist journal he was a fellow of, seems most direct in addressing this particular question.

As a physicist, I am aware that quantum mechanics, the
central theory of modern physics, is even more deterministic that was the classical mechanics of
which Darwin was aware. More than this, quantum mechanics is actually teleological, though
physicists don’t use this loaded word (we call it “unitarity” instead of “teleology”). That is,
quantum mechanics says that it is completely correct to say that the universe’s evolution is
determined not by how it started in the Big Bang, but by the final state of the universe. Every
stage of universal history, including every stage of biological and human history, is determined
by the ultimate goal of the universe. And if I am correct that the universal final state is indeed
God, then every stage of universal history, in particular every mutation that has ever occurred, or
ever will occur in any living being, is determined by the action of God. In other words, if the
laws of modern physics are correct, then Darwin has actually given the strongest argument for
Asa Gray Darwinism. Charles Darwin was actually an Intelligent Design Creationist!

Earlier in this section he discusses 'Asa Gray Darwinism' which he explains is just another name for IDC.

Asa Gray believed that the superior mutations, the irreducible complexity in the genome,
came from God.

On pgs. 9-10 of the PDF you can read how Tipler lays out this 'Asa Gray' theory and then he uses his own beliefs about the 'universal final state' to make an argument for ID, through Darwin supposedly.

Tipler does not come right out and say 'I am an intelligent design creationist,' but he does say things like

And if I am correct that the universal final state is indeed God,

It would seem difficult to escape the conclusion that he believes in a god-concept, and that he believes the argument he puts forth in this paper. Considering that his apparently self-written biography specifically mentions this:

I became Professor of Mathematical Physics in 1981 at Tulane University, where I have been ever since, working to draw the full implications of my earlier work: that quantum mechanics and general relativity require that the Cosmological Singularity - the Uncaused First Cause - consists of Three Persons but one Cause. I have now written up these results for a popular audience, and the book is The Physics of Christianity.

I don't know how anyone could dispute Tipler being a xian ID creationist, but I'm sure some believers would go ahead and try. Anyway, I considered posting this to the 'empty chair thread' but I don't know if they're still interested in Tipler's views or if that topic has passed on, so I put this here instead.
Futurama wrote: Bender: Dying sucks butt. How do you living beings cope with mortality?
Leela: Violent outbursts.
Amy: General slutiness.
Fry: Thanks to denial, I'm immortal.
