The syllogism that was a foundation of Western civilization

#1  Postby Shrunk » Nov 16, 2014 6:05 pm

OK, this is a bit old, but it has just come to my attention courtesy of The Sensuous Curmudgeon:

In responding to a blog post by Ed Brayton, Ellis Washington of WorldNetDaily wrote:

Until you repent and ask Jesus to come into your heart you will always be confused and wrong in your worldview, which will disallow you, I and your fellow bloggers the ability to have a rational discussion based on the syllogism that was a foundation of Western civilization:

If A = B, then A + B = C

Just wanted to share that. Carry on.

Ellis is stating that we live in the simplest of all semigroups.

Does he? Nothing in there requires associativity, so we can scale back to a Magma. And even that it too much. For the statement to hold, we just need a set and a unitary operator, with closure under that operator. In this case he is using a binary operator and states that it is closed if both arguments are equal. But in that case we can simply define a~ as a+a and end up with the unitary version. The simplest of all semigroups is far richer than that...

Apart from that I enjoyed the "when killer whales kill" article Ellis has linked, primarily because the idea of applying law written for humans to all animals is conjuring up images of a slug on trial for indecent exposure in my mind. The other article with the defect link he refers to stating that he "addressed the unsustainable aspects of Darwinian evolution in [his] law review article" has an interesting spin on the "Death-bed recantation" trope, stating that "[i]n the sixth edition of his book, The Origin of Species, Charles Darwin abandoned natural selection". That's pretty much all he has to say about the matter, which wouldn't even satisfy his claim in the blog if it was in any way substantiated.

It's the algebraic structure with the smallest signature for which the argument is valid. That is assuming you interpret the symbols "a", "b" and "c" as variables rather than constants.

It's a maths joke, he's assigning a technical meaning which clearly has little or no resemblance to whatever-the-fuck it is that the author intended.

OK, well that all went over my head in a hurry. I guess Ellis Washington understands all that stuff, though, right?

... As a Christian, I find that did not make any rational, or even religious, sense. Besides, if you can't have a rational discussion until after you're saved, how does one even try to win people for Christ? Rationality doesn't pertain only to physical matters, nor only to spiritual...

What the fuck. It seems there's a premise or axiom lacking there somewhere for his "then" to actually follow.

The only thing I can extract from A = B is that A+B = 2A, or 2B. It must be that special abrahamic s5 modal mathematical property exemplification nexus logic that also allows people born (supposedly) 6 millenia later to be guilty of events that happened before they existed, I'm not getting.

He really means: if A=B then C=A+B. Or, indeed, C=2A or C=2B.
So what? Anyway, define C and prove it.
