Earth's magnetic field changing

#1  Postby Jugs Monthly » May 06, 2011 8:10 am

This topic came up in another forum I'm a member of with someone claiming that:

Global warning actually is happening, but nowhere near to the degree that some people claim. It is relatively insignificant, and being used to help keep people under control. Much, much more significant is the earth's changing magnetic field. Many more earthquakes and strange behavior of the planet real soon.

I wasn't able to find any information which backs up this claim (that the changing magnetic field is responsible for earthquakes etc). On the contrary, in fact. Here's a typical response from an astronomy blog -

The Earth's changing magnetic field is, all of a sudden, being blamed for such diverse occurrences as earthquakes, unusual animal deaths and even increasingly erratic behaviour of groups of human beings. The thing is, there's no proof that any of these have increased outside of normal statistical bounds: there are no more Earthquakes at the moment than there have been in the past; no more animal deaths. What's changed is that due to the march of technology, these things are being reported more often, more consistently and more widely than ever before: they have always happened, but the news hasn't always reached us. It just feels like they're happening more often because more of the news is reaching us.

(from http://blogstronomy.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... ed-by.html)

On reporting my findings back in the forum I got this response -

Yes magnetic field changes are far more serious than global warming. If you found the reverse, you dont know better.

When the magnetic field of an enormoous sphere is changed, and the enormous plates are affected by the field because of a change of spin, the plates will shift more - their trajectory is changed and there is less equilibrium. It's like smashed glass in a bottle of water. Spin is around in a state of balance, and the shards will be relatively uniformed. But shift the axis of rotation, and the shards will move. aka earthquakes. See http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-01-tam ... d-due.html but there is so much more, although sorry I really dont have time to educate you. What would a 10 degree shift do to such a huge object such as earth? I suppose you think it would all be hunky dory with no significant changes in plates? The shifts are natural, but considering we are approaching a major planetary allignment of 2012, things dont look good from a "natural distaster" perspective. Keep in mind it is a one in 26,000 year cycle with a very unusual planetary allignment. I'm not talking about astrology and all that stuff. I'm talking about gravity and planet allignment.

I'm no physicist or geologist, is there anyone here who can assess the above assertions?

Thanks, and great forum!

When someone argues with "planetary alignments", the rest likely is bunk, too.

:hello: Jugs!

There are some indications that magnetic field changes precede earthquakes. However, according to the NASA site at least they don't appear to be tied to some sort shift in the general magnetic field of Earth, but rather would seem specific precursors of the event itself:
Scientists doing research with magnetometers just before major earthquakes have serendipitously recorded tiny, slow fluctuations in Earth's magnetic field. One example happened during the Loma-Prieta earthquake that devastated San Francisco in 1989. Almost 2 weeks before the quake, readings of low-frequency magnetic signals (0.01-0.02 Hz) jumped up to 20 times above normal levels, and then spiked even higher the day of the quake.

The cause of these signals is unknown

And indeed, the "planetary alingment" spleen does makes one somewhat doubtful as to the scientific credentials of the guy who "doesn't have time to educate you". Also, claims of ilk this have been around for a while, see for example here:

Jugs Monthly,
Don't get sucked into their game (where you are placed in the position of 'proving' them wrong), instead just ask them to provide some solid, reliable evidence of their claims!
Until they can substantiate the main premis of their argument, further discussion would be utterly pointless! :nono:
(Evidence should ideally be in the form of relevent peer-reviewed articles)
