Why are salt pans pink?

#1  Postby Will S » Mar 15, 2011 3:26 pm

My wife was recently in New Zealand and was greatly impressed by some pink salt pans. (Google for images using 'salt pans Blenheim' and you immediately get a superb example.)

Why are they pink? The two obvious ideas are (a) mineral content (If so which mineral?), or (b) algae. But does anybody know for sure?
