I'm not sure why you're suggesting that it's abnormal for shops owned and run by a company who supplies their own products not to sell the products of their direct competitor as well though. If you go into the Apple store would you expect them to sell you an android phone?

They're in pretty well every newsagent and supermarket Thommo. Youth gambling has quadrupled in the last two years, perhaps largely because they're ubiquitously on offer in respectable establishments (not bookies; the place where mum buys the groceries). Gambling is A ok! Buy a scratchcard along with your free-range eggs!

Why pay staff and rent costs to sell someone else's product that directly competes with your own? You posted this in the economics forum and there's a standard, obvious economic answer - you will only do it if it maximises your own profits. In the case of selling someone else's directly competing product it won't. Selling your own gambles sees all the revenue come to you. Selling someone else's is virtually worthless. That makes the net opportunity cost too great.

I feel scratchcards are destigmatised because they're sold in Sainsbury's, and not all economists adhere to free-market thinking.
