Finally finished my Biology degree

#1  Postby mrjonno » Oct 07, 2014 7:46 pm

Finished my Open University life sciences degree, took 7 years while doing a full time job, getting married and getting 3 cats in my life!

While I did most the work I really was inspired to do it by Richard Dawkins God Delusion taking me to the Selfish Gene and realising that biology isnt just a random list of body parts which is what it felt like at school

Lol, how true that rings. How I hated having to try to remember how one vertebra differed from another, without looking it up.

Two months until the results but going by previous marks I'm 99% I will get a 2:1

Then I've got to make a major decision about giving up a career in IT to try and do a Phd at 42: hmm

Nope, not easy at all. I took the same path for my second shot at college (having dropped out the first time), working full time and taking night classes. Not much time for anything else.

Congrats. I'm soon going to experience what you went through: just started a 3 year course in IT, apart from my fulltime job. Well done mrjonno!

Favourite was 'Senses' and Microbiology

Least favourite was Evolution (my last exam) which while the basic principles are sound I never seen so much 'greyness' in an undergraduate course. While there is plenty of disagreement in other parts of biology I've never seen them taught as undergraduate level except in passing.

I'm a firm believer in that before can challenge the consensus you need to learn what it is, spent loads of time learning about punctuated equilibrium when the majority but not all of scientists don't think it happens.

I think in the end I prefer life under a microscope reduces to its component parts rather than fuzzy ecological and historical stuff (not saying its not important but just not me)
