Gross Misconduct

An IT teacher who threatened pupils and took some to a strip club while he was drunk during a school trip has been banned from teaching for three years.

Richard Glenn's behaviour was so "unacceptable" he was sent home early during Longridge Towers School's trip to Costa Rica in July 2019, the Teaching Regulation Agency heard.

Mr Glenn, 55, admitted gross misconduct and was dismissed in August 2019.

...

After the three years have elapsed, Mr Glenn will need to apply for the ban to be lifted, the panel said.

Only 3 years? Cancel culture's obviously not working very well given the list of offenses!

His actions included:

Drinking with pupils
Allowing one or more pupils to drink alcohol despite being under the legal age of 18
Threatening to "kick the head in" of one pupil and "kill" another
Telling one pupil: "I'm not in trouble - you'll be in trouble"
After being aggressive to one pupil, he kissed the boy's forehead and told him "you're all right"
Taking one or more pupils to a strip club
Acting aggressively towards the woman leading the trip when she tried to help him back to his tent
Exposing himself to the woman in a shared hotel room, although it was agreed this was not "malicious or sexually motivated"

The panel said his behaviour "placed one or more pupils in his care at risk".

I remember a couple of teachers who became pally in the 6th form, but even the 'coolest' ones never got pissed and took pupils to a strip club!

It's hard to imagine why it's a temporary ban here. If he didn't know before this wasn't right, then 3 years isn't going to make any difference. Sure, everyone makes mistakes, and perhaps he'd had a bad run, but some mistakes just disqualify you from certain activities thereafter - like being responsible for the well-being of other people's kids.

3 years seems ridiculous, although let's be honest, he'll be 58 by then. The chances of another school ever hiring him at that age with this story public knowledge are pretty slim. I think it's safe to say his career as a teacher is done.

He has the right of appeal after three years. Doesn't mean he'll get it or even taken on if he's successful.

Truly appalling behavior and he deserves to be punished.
But in addition to his list of offenses, something else stood out to me...

"during Longridge Towers School's trip to Costa Rica"

Costa Rica!!?? Costa fuckin' Rica! Jesus, it's all a bit different from my memories of school trips....

"Where are we going this year?"
"Hadrian's Wall."
"Oh, same as last year then."
"Yep. Filling out worksheets in the pissing rain and sandwiches and crisps on the bus at lunchtime..."
"You had sandwiches? You lucky bastard..."
don't get me started

That's why we joined the astronomy club -
Leave school early for the drive into the wilds of Derbyshire.
Set up the telescopes to see Mercury and after an hour take everything down and go to the pub with the supervising teachers. Happy days.

I went to Austria with school in the 90s. We were told "It's legal for you to drink beer here......but don't." Then they booked out a small nightclub with another school for a few hours, with the teachers walking round to "check that no-one's drinking alcohol."

Reminds me of this...

Blimey. All my teachers in the seventies were 'Nobby Normals'. The biggest scandal I ever got involved with was we got taken to see Airport 77 on a field trip to Wales. :sigh:
