Groups applying to open fully selective faith schools with government funding revealed

Move could make social selectivity worse, says social mobility charity

The groups applying for government funding to create new faith schools that can select 100 per cent of their pupils on the basis of religion have been unveiled in the face of opposition from unions and secular campaigners.

Increasing the number of voluntary aided faith schools could be a “disaster for community cohesion” and make “social selection” much worse, campaigners and charities have warned.

And unions have questioned whether the funding for voluntary aided schools, set up by faith groups with council help, will provide places for the local children who need them most.

The majority of the 14 funding applications to the Department for Education (DfE) for new schools are located in the south – with five in London, three in Cambridgeshire and two in Hertfordshire.

It comes after a report from social mobility charity Sutton Trust called on top faith schools that are “socially selective” to admit more poorer pupils from local areas to ensure they are “fairer”.

At least faith schools have to teach TOE; heliocentric etc, unlike academies....but academies have to follow admissions rules....I'm really not sure which is worse : /

MMmh, something looks bad (it always does when you see the words "faith" any to close to "school")... but I don't have the background knowledge to fully understand what's up, and what these "admission rules" and "pupil selection" stuff actually mean.

No, me neither really, I learnt the stuff in post #3 just now, along with the unsettling info that there are such things as Faith Academies which don't have to teach the national curriculum and have their own "special" admissions processes.

basically, they just take paying pupils from family with money and no brains it seems... and I don't trust those schools that make themselves free from gummint rules on curriculum, I know a little girl who's done all her elementary school in one (not religious, fortunately), and the propagandastaffel was horrendous... still can't see how her mom could impoverish the family just to make sure her girl's "education" would include a good level of English... after all, I am a living proof that you can be good in English from 3 years of middle school and lots of fun work. (basically, I went from last of the class to English champ over 3 months when in 4th form just because I dug into books that I wanted to read and I knew were untranslated).

Regardless of whatever type of school it is they should all follow the same curriculum
and shouldnt be allowed to cherry pick what is and isnt acceptable for them to teach

I went to a Catholic comprehensive between 75 - 82 and we had exactly the same curriculum / exams as every
other secondary school in the country and that is how it still should be for reasons of simplicity / practicality
