Groan :)
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

I think that the worst one I've come across had to be a black boy named "Simian".

Actually that's a medieval Nordic name. Same derivation as the biblical Simeon and Simon. If someone told me their name was "Simian" I would immediately think of Simeon, not the ape-like association.

Except of course now I wouldn't.

I'd spell it Simeon.

I think most people would, but it does appear to have been the spelling of the name in medieval Denmark, Sweden etc...

OK I didn't know it was Danish, it appears in the Bible here:

Luke 2:25-35
King James Version (KJV)
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

So I would see it as a "Christian" name.

Presumably she didn't know what 'simian' means. When I was at university, back in the days before the internet, I had a boyfriend who regularly pulled this face that one of his friends described as 'simian'. I didn't have a clue what he was talking about and had to ask.

From the beloved Beth Riesgraf's IMDB page :

Gave birth to her first child at age 25, a son named Pilot Inspektor Riesgraf-Lee, on September 28, 2003. Child's father is her ex-fiancé, Jason Lee.

surreptitious57 wrote:One has to be very careful about publicly mocking the names of the children of others. I once made the mistake of thinking that Frank Zappa could have been less creative when it came to choosing those of his own offspring. When he stated that he did not want them being made fun of and in no uncertain terms too I backed off. I really should have known better. Now I do not bat an eyelid when I hear them. I still do not like them [ the names not the children ] but they are not my children so my opinion means absolutely nothing and so I keep it to myself. Frank is dead now of course but I still respect him for educating me. I may have mentioned this before but this is a more brutal version

Not that long ago Kate [ one ] appeared on I T V telling Phil that she does not let her children mix with other children if they have certain names because they are common and as she is not that would not do. Because I have no real memory anymore [ I hope I never witness a crime because I will be hacked to shreds in the dock ] I cannot recall what those names were. But my mothers name was Kate [ two ] and we are as lower class it is possible to be [ peasant Celtic stock ] What a shame Frank is not around to educate her [ Kate one ] I actually found her reasonably attractive [ I am allowed to say that as it is true ]

Her name is Katie Hopkins, she is vile. The names were Tyler and anything which was a place name. When it was pointed out her own child is called India she tried to bluster her way out of it.

Slightly off topic [ only slightly ] : here in this country some would get really offended if someone from a higher class looked down on them. They would probably suggest that all are equal. To which I would suggest they go ask George Orwell for his opinion [ in theory we are all equal of course and that should be the way it is. Obviously. But that is not the same in practice however.

They got rid of second class carriages on trains some time ago, surr.

And that is all I am saying on that ] I am lower class and always have been. That means that anyone who is middle or upper class is automatically superior to me. I have no problem with that. No one else can get upset at that because it only affects me. More white cats would increase life expectancy. Did you ever own one Mister Fleming ?

Er...what? ''Lower'' class? Do you mean you're working class? I'm working class born and raised, although I suppose that since I and the other half have professions not ''just'' jobs and own our home that we are actually middle class now. Who gives a shit? It would be interesting to see you justify your claim that I am superior to you, or that anyone else is because of some out-dated system which has ceased to have any real meaning.
