I keep meaning to brush up on my grammar but keep getting side tracked.

Now I think you are taking the piss, so why not point out my error and thereby help me brush up?

Well, "more stupid" is probably recommended above "stupider." Although technically "stupider" is a word [that one is really more of a pet peeve than anything, but I can't really expect everyone to humor me on that one].
Although "increase" should definitely be "increases."

The first one is fine where I'm from. The second one is an obvious error; clearly I meant to write "increases".

Well it's not particularly smart to insult the intelligence of people without proof-reading your insults, is it?

Well, only up to the point where the debate makes your assertion seem even more stupiderestier, as you might say.

Knowledge and intelligence are two different things. But plenty of people want to pretend and delude themselves that the possession of knowledge means they are intelligent. But these people also have the incentive to keep other people ignorant.

What nation in the world has a National Recommended Reading List classified by subject and age? So any person that wanst to know about a subject knows where to start. The vast majority of books are CRAP.

because when they were young they were stupid themselves. I was. :D

Seriously though, kids are getting dumber in my country, education standards wise, now they are taught to pass exams by rote rather than learn to think for themselves as often as not, it's entirely well shit to be frank. Most kids these days can't multiply 20x13 without a calculator. That bites.

Also some universities are claiming that many people coming through there doors are just not up to scratch, and need classes to catch up, this is not the responsibility of Unis but colleges, if they are failing to educate the youngens then it is behoven on the system to make them better able to attempt further education, not to waste time trying to leg up under achievers, whatever the reason.
If you can't beat them kick them.

I once made an off-hand comment at home that "I'm not afraid of death. I don't really worry about dying."

My son immediately asked: "Do you worry about me dying".

"Yes", I answered.

"Do you worry about ***** (his sister) dying?" he continued.

"Yes" I had to admit.

"Ah, so you really ARE afraid of death, aren't you?"

Game, set and match. Logical-dialectical ass brusquely, humilatingly whipped.

He was six at the time. :o

Oh they're smart, just seriously lack reasoning skills.

I'm a teacher and every day I'll hear a kid mentioned something he (usually he) read on the internet as truth

"No, Obama wasn't born in America"
"The world will end in 2012, lots of people think so"
"Lady Gaga is a [insert rumor here]"
"Justin Bieber died!" (actually that was a girl)

And then the worst of all...

"Yes I know so, it's on the internet!!!"

Isn't that more to do with inexperience and credulity than reasoning skills?

They just haven't been around long enough, and experienced enough, to learn that most of what people say is bullshit.

I've taught middle and high school for 20 or so years, and I've always been impressed at how psychologically adept kids are at running circles around many adults, notably their parents and teachers (myself included). When I first started teaching, I was a bit too serious in the classroom sometimes, and students would drive me bananas. With a little reading on adult/teenager communication and some helpful advice from an administrator, I was able to step back from a situation, speculate what was going on in the kid's mind, refocus on the issue or perhaps defuse the situation with a bit of humor.

Hearing kids talk talking to their parents and about them, I came to understand the various strategies kids use to get their way (this was particularly true in families with divorced parents). It's quite amazing to watch. Essentially, kids are extremely adept intuitive psychologists, while many adults seem to have lost this ability. I see the same sort of thing in my 7 yr-old, whom I love dearly, but she can be a bit dramatic and willful at times, testing my patience on occasion. Fortunately, I have good deal of experience with kids, so I'm able to step back and analyze what's going on before I react, redirect, or concede. Without that experience, I would probably just react in an angry, doltish manner.

Some adults may indeed think that children are stupid. I think that kids in general are pretty sharp - many just lose that edge when they become parents themselves.

IF they are sharp enough they wont loose that edge, surely?

Congrats by the way on being a decent teacher, the government has pretty much ruined our education by not listening to those on the front line and just making them jump through virtual and unrealistic hoops. Silly Labour.

I think that as most people get older, they lose that childhood perspective, nearly completely forgetting what life was like as a child. Even if they are quite psychologically sharp in their day-to-day dealings with adults, many fail to empathize with children effectively.

For parents, this can result in a couple of standard behaviors: a) they become stricter, and their daily communication with the child is constantly full of strife (I know of no other way to correct Johnny's defiant behavior than to constantly challenge him), or b) they become overly permissive, ignoring a child's bad behavior in order to avoid conflict (it's okay, Johnny will grow out of it eventually). The paradoxical truth is that children desire both leniency and liberty as well as ritual and structure.

QFT. Well said. I had a good grounding as child, I pushed the barriers but the line was clear, you crossed it you got a metaphorical slap, I don't think a lot of children have a decent line nowadays. children are no different than they were 200 thousand years ago, to excel all they need is a decent role model, and someone who hasn't forgotten what its like to be a child also.

I think most children are stupid. But they don't get any smarter as they grow up.

This is a pet hate of mine.
I remember being a child and I remember adults patronising me and thinking I was fucking stupid :nono:
I don't get why adults do this. Do they not, also, remember being a child?
