Macdoc thinks that whatever he holds near and dear should be likewise regarded by everyone else. Monitors and television sets are just one case in point.

While I really do appreciate how audiovisual technology keeps improving in leaps and bounds, I don't feel the need to update or upgrade my equipment just because it's available at a certain price point. Upgrade time commences around the time a component gets flaky or on the day it suddenly dies altogether. That is why I've owned only four TVs in 40 years. The current one is the first non CRT unit I ever bought, a ten year old 40 inch 1080p Sony Bravia. No DNLA, no ability to play most compressed file formats, not even a LAN socket. I suppose I could buy and plug a gadget into one of the HDMI sockets that will make up for those lack of features, but there's insufficient care factor for me to do that. Most of the TV I watch is on the computer via a hybrid TV capture card, which incidentally is even older than my TV.

If Macdoc stopped posting in the style that makes people feel they are inferior for not sharing his enthusiasms and opinions, he would not grate on so many members so fulsomely. I don't expect him to change, though.

Ah, the other theme of the thread. The opportunity for Macdoc to show off about all of the great things he owns.

I don't really have a position. I made a perfectly reasonable point that it's fine for you to like and own 4k, but your snark is unnecessary. You chose to respond with more of the snark.

Again, you are not the arbiter of such things. I did contribute, I just didn't do it in a way of which you approve. You choose to characterise what was said in the least charitable way, that's on you. It is a valid point that some people can't afford to update to a slightly clearer picture because it's nice. You're just out of touch, that's all. Another person might ponder this and adapt their views accordingly.

psst if you think

You keep saying 'nothing new' like this has been demonstrated many times. It hasn't. You are apparently oblivious to the fact that what is not new is your immediate, childish knee-jerk reaction to anyone who even looks like they might be disagreeing with you.

I go by what you say, but that's hard to do when what you say keeps changing. You just told us you are 'well compensated' by your clients, now you apparently think that earning over one and a half times the average UK wage makes you hard-up. We know you employ staff - I guarantee you most people don't and can't do that. We know you split your time between Canada and Australia, which requires money. We know you have been all over the world, taking numerous trips with your motorbike. Most people will get one, maybe two holidays a year if they're lucky, personally I have taken a one-week staycation for the lat 8 years. This will not be changed by us deciding to eat ready meals. We know you scoff at the idea that some people don't have 220 quid lying about, a pretty unsurprising fact for anyone who lives a normal life. You can't have it both ways. You're either hard up, in which case your derisive attitude towards other hard up people makes zero sense, or you're not, and you're just now trying to look like you have hard decisions to make. Whatever it is, your snidey comments towards people who just have the nerve to not be the same as you are pathetic.

Macdoc wrote:...if you don't want to follow the the information fuck off.

Just speaking for myself, I welcome the information, and I bet I am not the only one.

It's stuff like this that irritates me:
Macdoc wrote:Buying ANYTHING not 4k now - camera's TVs, monitors is seriously misguided.

Spending significant money on LED 4k screens is also misguided as OLED will dominate this season and next and is truly stunning.

This season? This fucking season? Do I look like a dedicated follower of fashion? Unless a season lasts several years, as I have made abundantly clear, your judgement on what to buy now is as laughable as it is irrelevant. And your advice for us to fuck off is something only thoroughly unattractive, cantankerous curmudgeons are expected to say. You're not an unattractive, cantankerous curmudgeons, are you?

For the record - again - I do not replace my gear by the season. At the rate I'm using my ten year old TV it will probably last another four years at a minimum. It will not be replaced before then. I did buy a pair of 22 inch LG 1080p IPS monitors when two previous monitors I had for eight and nine year respectively blew up in quick succession and I was down to one 19 inch 720p backup relic. In all likelihood they'll do me for another seven years or so before I upgrade.

The information you provide is always welcomed chez Hermitage, but please don't tell me what I ought to do. My priorities, requirements and desires are nothing like yours, and it seems not like those of many other forum members either. Remember that next time you step up to your pulpit.

Oh, it is we who must get over ourselves, not the person who finds nothing ridiculous in saying with a straight face that not buying a certain TV is 'misguided'...like that's the most important thing we have to think about.

The last post on 8k was from another forum where people actually engage in the technology ....try it sometime.

1. Just for the sake of argument, why the fuck should someone try something if they really don't care?
2. What makes you think we don't engage with technology? As Hermit says, I'm pretty interested in the technological advances we are making. It's your blinkered understanding of what that entails which is causing you your current problems.

This is a resource for me ...

What is, the forum? You don't seem to be set to receive at all, only transmit. If you're dumping stuff here for your convenience, this is the wrong format for you.

if you don't want to follow the the information fuck off.

I can only speak for myself, but I will continue to post here for as long as I like, and am able.

I happen to be in a tech industry so I get toys to try for my clients.

Right, so what has not buying a certain TV being 'seriously misguided' got to do with this? Most of us do not work in the tech industry or get toys to try for our clients.

I OWN very little, nor do I make much income....I just make it go far.

Yeah, sure. So you don't own the latest technology? What are you doing berating people for not owning it then? You do make 'much income', by the way.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the ludicrously long trip you'll make for a cup of coffee. Thanks for reminding me of that little gem.

Incidentally, you don't appear to have answered US's question. Where did you see the TV at that price? He can't seem to find it.

Anyone who knows grammar and speaks Orange will have immediately worked out that cotu is the present infinitive form of a verb, the present indicative plural in the second person plural form of which is covfefe.

Give me a break. If your argument was that for your circumstances, 4k is great, then no-one would have a problem. But your argument was effectively that everyone else should buy 4k too (regardless of circumstances, viewing habits, or whether you're sitting too far away to notice the difference). I know plenty of situations where 4k and even 8k would be desirable. It's just that sitting in a living room watching Eastenders isn't one of them, and neither is watching Youtube videos on your phone.

I'd encourage everyone to look at the top of page 4. This is the point that Macdoc fails to actually address any of the points put to him last time and goes back to just posting videos and reverts to his delusion that he's the most knowledgeable person on the topic and no-one else knows what they're talking about. As I said, that seems to be the pattern of this thread. Although my favourite thing about the most recent round is how he's come on to talk about how 8k isn't really worth it, and used the exact same arguments that everyone else has posted about 4k. Maybe he just has better eyes that the rest of us, and he reached his threshold at a slightly higher resolution?

Well everything has been said for a snob living in Cairns, Australia. A place I have been to which would compare favourably with pictures I have seen of Detroit.

Expert? I agree very a delusional one. A 50"screen is not good enough for 4k (read the real experts) the minimum is 65". Which house can take or want that. As IWS said just to watch East Enders of the news? Price here begins at €1100. With a few add ons it becomes €1700.

We replaced our TV a few months ago, got a good deal on a 55" 4K. The 44" 1080p went into the spare bedroom to replace the old 36" 1080, which is going onto the boat. It's alright, seems a bit clearer than the 1080 but to see the difference I need to wear my glasses. Blu ray disks look noticeably better, but we don't rent many movies these days, just too easy to stream something. There was quite a noticeable difference in the big screen TVs at the shop, but prices were absurd. I'm not paying over a grand for a fucking television.

Shops are always optimal. I remember the HiFi days and going to listen in the shops to some great HiFi in special studios.
