Craig: Austin Powers ruined James Bond

Daniel Craig thinks Austin Powers ruined the James Bond franchise.

The 44-year-old actor - who has played the British spy in two movies and recently finished filming the third, Skyfall - believes the spoof film series starring Mike Myers "fucked" the way the Bond series had worked as it had all been parodied so much.

I can't say I agree with him.

Can't see how the Austin Powers series is even relevant. It doesn't have the prominence James Bond films have. The first Austin Powers had three laughs, the second had none and the I didn't watch the third the second was so bad. It'll be forgotten about in ten years.

I'm really not clear as to what Craig even meant by this. On the surface, it sounds less like a wish that Powers hadn't been made, and more that taking the spoof as far as it did, finally forced the Bond people to stop the ancient, worn-out, and thoroughly lame repetition of standardized Bond double-entendres. I certainly have found that the more recent Bond films have been much more interesting, since dropping that clownish nonsense.

Did Craig never see the original Casino Royale? Besides, JB movies were as camp as fuck, they rarely seemed to take themselves too serious, except after Moore perhaps.

Admittedly the sequels are crap.

Daniel Craig's Casino Royale was topnotch... and, based on the trailer, Skyfall looks pretty promising. However, Quantum of Solace was a big letdown, IMO. Everything from the witless script to the epileptic shaky-cam to the totally crap theme song (a tuneless caterwauling with nonsensical thrown-together lyrics) made Craig's second Bond outing a disappointment.
Heck, this one scene (from the first Austin Powers movie) has more entertainment value than the entirety of Quantum of Solace...
