Comedian Rik Mayall dies 56

#1  Postby The Plc » Jun 09, 2014 5:23 pm

British comedian and actor Rik Mayall has died aged 56, according to his management team.

He played the obnoxious, poetry-writing anarchist Rick in The Young Ones alongside his friend Adrian Edmondson before the duo later went on to star in their sitcom Bottom.

Mayall also appeared in shows including Blackadder and The New Statesman.

He died at home in London. The Metropolitan Police said the death was not believed to be suspicious.

They said they were called to reports of a sudden death of a man in his 50s at 13:19 BST on Monday, in Barnes in south west London.

London Ambulance Service said "a man, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene".

The BBC's director of television Danny Cohen called Mayall a "truly brilliant comedian".

"His comic timing was outstanding and his screen presence unique. For a generation of viewers he was a true comedy hero," said Cohen.

Deeply saddened by this. He was an incredibly funny man and absolutely stole the show in everything he was ever in.

Here's a link to some of his funniest work.

...And punks and skins and Rastas will all gather ’round and hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader! And all the grownups will say, “But why are the kids crying?’ And the kids will say, ‘Haven’t you heard? Rick is dead! The people’s poet is dead!”

Then one particularly sensitive and articulate teenager will say, “Why kids? Do you understand nothing? How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?!”

Really sad. Drop dead Fred drops dead.
The problem with fantasies is you can't really insist that everyone else believes in yours, the other problem with fantasies is that most believers of fantasies eventually get around to doing exactly that.

From the BBC website

Edmondson added: "There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing.

They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him.

"And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."

Very sad. Huge fan of bottom when I was a kid, and I still got some nostalgia from watching those Bombadier adverts, that we'll no longer get.

It should also be remembered how sexy Mayall could be:

I did not say I was a fan of huge bottoms. That would be for Captain Rum: "You have a woman's bottom, my lady!"

He may have mentioned it in the book, as it's from an episode of the Young Ones.

First time I became aware of 'alternative comedy' and Rik & the rest of the Comic Strip team, was in a one-off BBC program in 1981, called Boom Boom Out Go The Lights. My housemates and I thought it was brilliant, pissed ourselves laughing. Next day at work, my 'older' colleagues all thought it was disgusting.
