Curb Your Enthusiasm

#1  Postby Shrunk » Nov 03, 2012 9:11 pm

I was a big fan of this series for the first five seasons, and then for some reason I stopped watching. I've just picked it up again on DVD for Season Six (where the Black family moves in with Larry) and damn if the show didn't go up a whole other level. I'm laughing so hard at scenes like this I worry I'l hurt myself :

Not to mention this, which may be the most morbid scene in a TV comedy since the death of Susan Ross on Seinfeld:

Anyway, that's all just a pretext to start a thread on the series, in case there are other fans here. Has it kept up the quality thru season 8?

I love it. I was reluctant to watch for a while because I was told it was from the creators of Seinfeld. I hate Seinfeld.

:hide:

I found this show to be far funnier. Actually, I didn't find Seinfeld funny of all so that wouldn't be saying much. Let's just say I found it a laugh riot.
Like you, though, I sort of stopped watching it. No real reason. It just fell to the wayside. Pity I can't watch the clips because I'm waiting for the sound to be fixed on this laptop. I wonder if the show is on Netflix (which I have via the Wii)?

I agree with Ani. Seinfeld is utterly shite, but Curb is magnificent.

I gave Seinfeld another try, thinking I had missed something, but no - it's completely shit. It's fucking bewildering - I don't see any of Larry David in Seinfeld.

The great moments in Curb for me include Michael Yorke's swearing at the end of the episode with the tourettes chef, Larry & Cheryl's discussion about their vows (till death us do part) being over and he can be single in the afterlife, anything at all with Wanda, and Susie's "Jew face" rant at Larry.

And every second with Richard Lewis involved (especially the one with the Christian scientist girlfriend who reacted to peanuts in the brownie).
It's PETUNIAS TIME again, folks!!!

 I done that too after reading a thread on this site. I thought maybe in my young. gurrier, drug/dance-scene days, before I started reading and becoming the finesse, sophisticated person you see now, the show would've went over my head with its bojour themes and subtle humour.

It's as 'bout as sophisticated as tea-dunked Hob-Nobs and fingerless woollen gloves :nono:

EDIT: Spelt "bijou" wrong

Such finesse.

I'll give the show a try, never heard of it before.

So a box set of The Complete Seinfeld won't be a good choice for birthday present, will it?

You'll just have to settle for my best wishes, then.

Love it. Sometimes cringe-inducing, like seeing a car wreck, but overall clever and funny. Heven't seen for a while now since I dumped cable. Have to check Netflix.

it took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I was hooked.
And yeah.. I agree with NulMan.. the cringe factor is huge in this show.
Phew... for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself.....

The cringe factor is it's thing. But very funny.

The two posted videos are not the best representation of the show, but the second one is a good example of how OTT the show gets.

It isn't the fact that a chihuahua was stamped to death that is funny. It's once you realize how fucked that guy is now all because he thought he was helping out. That's the funny part. That matched with the expression on his face and feeble attempts to still explain that it is a rat, I find that hilarious.

Oh I find it hilarious, he's a genius at making the cringe worse and worse and worse, just when you think he couldn't go any lower... he goes lower still.

That episode contains one of my favourite moments, when Larry invites his rabbi to dinner, and the rabbi asks if he can bring a friend who is a "survivor":

IIRC, that's the same episode where Larry tries to cash in his 10th anniversary present with the horny hassid, played by Gina Gershon. A classic.

I've been a huge fan of this show from Season 1. Back at home channel 4 used to show it late at night and I was a bit of a night owl so I stumbled across it. Been watching ever since and constantly trying to convince people that it's the best comedy of the 2000s. Larry David is fucking awesome.

I've watched an interview with him and apparently the Larry on the TV show is just his alter ego of the things he would like to say but he normally shy's away from due to social etiquette.

He takes a notepad with him everywhere and writes down stuff he would have liked to have said to people that annoy him. In this respect the show is loosely based on his life and many of the anecdotal events are actually mimicked from his real life.

The man is comedy gold.

I would say it requires a mandatory three episodes of viewing before you start to "get it".

I think the main reason this show isn't more of a phenomenon is that most people watch one (or half) an episode and just switch it off. They never get into it, they don't get what Larry is about and they find the format off putting.
