Late to the party, but...

It's not only possible to survive a hail of gunfire, like from the Gatling guns in the Last Samurai , but much more intense and powerful gunfire. Some of the men landing at Normandy faced much more lethal odds and somehow survived. Just because there is a lot of bullets in the air doesn't mean they are placed on target.
