From where do you get your television programming?

#1  Postby The_Metatron » Mar 09, 2015 2:55 am

In Northern Europe, we got our programming from the Astra satellite, the Freesat services from the UK. I had a Humax receiver with a built-in DVR, that understood the Freesat Electronic Program Guîde. It had a 1 TB hard drive, which let us record tons of programs.

Since moving to Oregon though, I found there is no similar satellite service here. Although there are satellites that transmit similar signals, none of that shit is free. Cable television isn't worth the cost, either. I have cable to my house, but pay for only the Internet service. In both cases, I find I don't need to pay great sums to not watch all the shit they broadcast. So, I decided to set up to receive terrestrial digital television.

I tried one of those flat panel antennas that you can stick to a window. But, it didn't perform as well as I expected. So, I installed an exterior antenna on the roof, to receive the local terrestrial digital television broadcasts. I bought the exterior antenna from ChannelMaster. Had a hell of a time finding the J-pole to mount it, though. I found a local electronics parts store that had one on hand. The interior antenna would deliver 16 channels. The exterior antenna delivers 26.

ChannelMaster also sells the only DVR I found that has a program guide for terrestrial DTV. I am amazed how thin the thing is:

So, at least I'm not paying for crap TV. And, we can grab the programs we like to the hard drive. I'm happy with the system. This, plus my Apple TV, and we're set.

Nothing off-air? Your Freeview system has excellent programming. Well, some of it.

Plus streaming.

But on television, via glassfiber digital television from one of the local suppliers.

The cable. Plenty of stations with no ads. BBC1 to 4 plus BBC Entertainment for a start.

The Dutch NPO stations have minimal ads. No breaks during the programmes. I can live with that.
