Star Trek was up against shows like Bonanza, Daktari, The Virginian, The Rat Patrol, and Tarzan in the USA in the action/adventure genre. For science fiction we had Lost in Space, Thunderbirds, The Time Tunnel, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I don't recall any Dr Who on US television at the time.
I have no nostalgia for them and recent technical advances are superb but wtf has Star Trek: Picard got to do with anything?Beaming down for a fist fight was/is a plainly stupid idea and as a plot development tool it's just wasteful of everyone's time.

The original Star Trek did have a lot of goofy tropes, such as all the senior officers beaming down into unsecure situations to wring some drama out of the lead actors getting in and out of trouble.
