IIRC, this movie was nearly universally panned.

Im not seeing that. It has an average score of 60%

It is a standard British comedy flick with relative faithfulness to the book (as best an adaptation can be). I love it though :P

The real story behind Diving Resort....I don't give a fuck what some of the critics say - it's a terrific story that deserves to be told, is well told and a superb cast. FFS 6,000 people rescued !!!

The Red Sea Diving Resort’: Director Gideon Raff On His Killer Netflix Cast & More [Interview]
Alex Arabian July 30, 2019 4:08 pm Interviews, News

Producer, writer, and director Gideon Raff is, perhaps, most well-known for creating the hit Israeli show “Prisoners of War,” and producing and writing several seasons of its American counterpart “Homeland.” A veteran of both television and film, Raff’s latest feature-length effort, “The Red Sea Diving Resort,” tells the important story of a group of Mossad agents (Chris Evans, Haley Bennett, Michiel Huisman, Alessandro Nivola, Alex Hassell), who embark on a covert operation to, with the help of local Kabede Bimro (Michael K. Williams), provide safe passage for persecuted Ethiopian Jews during a time of heightened religious tensions between the first and second civil wars of Sudan in 1977.

I think that’s the main thrust of the criticism: that it reduces a harrowing RL ordeal to a cheesy action set-piece for Chris Evans. (I haven’t seen it, but looking forward to.)

Something else that made me roll my eyes... stock Hollywood fill-ins apparently even for the non-entity refugees. I love me some Michael Kenneth Williams, but... if you’re going to eliminate the Ethiopian Jews from any real characterization, couldn’t you find a handful of Ethiopian Jews to act out the parts... or at least believable locals... and then also give them meaningful roles? (Again, I haven’t seen it, but looking forward to.)

The history of the migration is kind of a sickly one. Thousands (more than these 6000) were nobly rescued from a dire situation in (ultimately) their country of origin. Only to be transplanted to a country that doesn’t really want them, and considers them an eyesore to be tolerated (in part because they count against a future Arab/Muslim plurality in greater Israel) as long as they don’t reach beyond their station. It’s a tidbit that informs artistic motive.

Anyway, will watch it next, after this... :tehe: good movie.

Border (2018). Scandinavian fairy tale. A few hair-raisingly emotional moments carried by the strong performances (especially Eva Melander as the misfit Tina), surrounded by a typical grey-blue somberness. It lingers.

The Red Sea Diving Resort (2019). Ahmigawd no.

There's sometimes a whiff of writing that knows & appreciates the history... but something... happened to this script, and... not in a good way. :teef: Thirty minutes was enough. I tried finding the name of the electronic pop ditty at around 24 mins, and couldn't... but I'm so relieved to find out that they acquired the licenses to both "Just an Illusion" by Imagination and "Hungry Like a Wolf" by Duran Duran. There must've been some high-fives that day.

The hardiest high-five surely came after Chris Evans sent word to say he'll take the job. Oops- I mean the jaaaaaaahb. The jaaaaaahb in Soo-daaaayyyn. By the time he's correcting someone's Italian pronunciation I'd already checked out. Interestingly enough, his very Amurr-kin mispronunciation of a place name - while briefing half the Israeli defense ministry, no less - refers to a tribe from a different area of the map altogether.

Oh well. Who gives a fuck, right? Let's dance!

You were taking it too personally ;) Obviously, I was referring to these people: Box office. $2.794 billion and if you were not among them certainly not to you.

So my 11-year-old nephew loved Endgame, especially the Fortnite scene with Thor harassing another player. According to him it was better than Infinity War. Though I admit I did not tell him I thought it was shit. He is 11 years old after all.

Might pick up some tips here, finally, thanks to you people ;)

Not to b confused with Ender's Game which, I insist, truly is utter shite....in fact unparalleled in it's particular branch of garbageosity.

good cast, marginal lighting and Mara is not Lisbeth....the Swedish movie is far better but kudos for trying. I noticed they have not even started the second one...

Daniel Craig is better than I thought he would be portraying a journalist

I did enjoy it but watching the original in Swedish now

Image

Better from the get go...lighting alone....now I can watch the whole trilogy - Rapace is truly brilliant
Casting for the Swedish version feels far more authentic....the star power helps the US one but it's shallow by comparison tho Mara gives it a good effort.
Rapace really powers the original.

so much better movie....

however Sony did try again ...forgot about Girl in the Spider Web ....I like Clair Foy but she is even further from Lisbeth.

I watched that one on DVD about a year ago and thought it was hysterical. I would love to see it in a theater with a crowd.

Shortly after that, I watched The Disaster Artist on a plane and was practically howling with laughter. I re-watched the "I did not hit her. It's not true. It's bullshit. I did not hit her. I did not. Oh, hi Mark." scene probably a dozen times. This film is available on Amazon Prime (at least in the US) so sometimes I'll click on it and just watch that scene just for a random laugh.

The actor who plays Mark and who wrote the "Disaster Artist" book was at the showing I went to. He had original scripts and invited people from the audience up to do readings. Unbelievably the original script is so much worse than what became the movie.

Back in the day, I rewound and replayed Cousin Eddie's "Merry Christmas, shitter was full" line in Christmas Vacation so many times on my vhs tape, that it wore out the audio and only played in silence for that moment. :lay:

Chronicles of Narnia. It's a poor movie to be sure, but now I understand why folk here used to talk about it being a New Testament facsimile. Gu-rim
