What did I miss? It just seemed like a let-down after the first Avengers.

That seems to do away with pretty much everything that I liked about the original

Better on DVD. Some brilliant one liners and a OK story.

Not a film exactly but a short my son worked on for his film class.

A bit of an homage to Run Lola Run and Spike Lee therein. I think it’s good.

Defiance with Daniel Craig. I knew nothing about it before watching. I was expecting a mindless action film based on the cover photo of Craig holding a gun. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Instead it was a serious drama about Jewish people surviving and defending themselves in a forest during WWII.
It was sad and frightening.

Looks familiar but maybe I'm thinking of T36 ...my kind of story if based on true events. I like Daniel Craig.

It was based on a true story. I only can remember seeing Craig in some forgettable (to me) 007 movie before this. I won't forget this one for a while.

6 Underground (2019) on Netflix. What an utterly tiresome action-fest of overly produced garbage viewing. All show and no substance. Watch The French Connection instead.

I watched Found Footage 3D last night. Bit odd. It's somewhere between a meta-comedy and a horror movie. And instead of going back and forth tonally between the two and making me dizzy, it's just found some sort of middle that feels comfortable. It's not a thrilling type of found footage horror and it doesn't have that deep dark fear feel that the good ones manage, but it was entertaining.

I think we saw that one...like...in the way I think I locked my car when I got home from work this evening. Like, I probably did, because that’s the sort of thing I do, but like...don’t quote me on it? Like...don’t ask me if I did it before stepping up onto the kerb? Or..after?

I’m meant to sound like the girl in Signs, but I can’t find a gif of her, you know the one, she’s serving behind the counter in the drug store and Mel Gibson wants to buy something but she keeps calling him ‘Father’ because he used to be a priest but he lost his faith when his wife got splatted by M. Night Shyamalan, and she wants to confess that she’s used curse words, and she won’t listen to Mel when he says he’s not ‘Father’ anymore, she just keeps listing the curse words she’s said, and we don’t see how it gets resolved, because it keeps cutting to Merl in the army recruitment place, or the kids buying a book on alien invasion.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

I don't know. I saw the Scary Movie 3 take off of Signs long before I saw Signs, so it left the stronger impression. Haha Camryn Manheim's hat kept getting bigger haha.

But yeah, basically, Found Footage 3D is like Scream but for found footage movies. And it doesn't understand why Scream was good, so it just does a couple of meta-ish commentary tricks that aren't even very studied. But other times it's more like found footage commenting on meta-films than vice versa, so it ends up having a lot of the usual fare.

Adaptation (2002): Yas. The Irishman (2019): Yas.

Adaptation (2002). Earnest/cool action star is embarrassing on this guy, but he can play the shit out of self-loathing (and world-weary grizzle-man, I'm learning). A meditation on the process of writing, and some related things. Fun, funny, a bit surreal, moving. "I love you too, you know." Oof.

The Irishman (2019). The three and a half hours felt like two and a half. I'm not sure the actors bring anything new to the movie - they do what they do, and it's solid. Scorsese does draw more pathos out of De Niro than I'm used to, and it's appropriate, but also paradoxical considering who the character is. Technical delights up the wazoo. The kind of audio-visual artistry that makes me grin and gasp and skip back often. Music editing is especially great, but in a long list.

What's it about... eh. Set mainly in the 60s, hired muscle, the mob, and Jimmy Hoffa.

One scene threw me for a loop. It was shocking, I don't understand it, and I'm not sure I want to. In a conversation scene around 2:32:00 De Niro glances away from his companion and stares cold-eyed at the camera, three times over approximately 20 seconds. It looks maybe incidental, like just the way the space is arranged, and may or may not be intentional. But it sure as hell triggered my savanna instincts.
