Watched a couple of horror dealies...

Crawl (2019) Your usual disaster movie with the "people against hungry nature" thing. Mostly pretty standard fare. But Kaya Scodelario is the lead and she really commits to it. Don't think it'd be anything like as entertaining as it was if she wasn't in there. Also some decent direction in places - the earlier parts had some good eeriness in the midst of the whole storm scenario. Thought it would be a dud, ended up having fun.

Haunt (2019)
This one's the "Halloween spook house is actually run by murderers" thing. I swear I just watched another movie with the exact same premise, but I can't remember the title. This was one was better. Darker, more violent, more severe. Not great, but better than expected.

I’m pretty sure we’ve watched the latter, not sure about the former. What’s it about?
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

A young woman (grew up as a swimmer) drives into a hurricane to try to find her dad at his house and encounters some large beasties. It's all about rising flood waters and such. It's not the greatest thing ever, but it's solid.

Hmm no, don’t think we have seen that one. I dunno if I want to, I’m not really a beastie person.

I love all God’s creatures. I just don’t like monster/creature films much.

I watched another.

In the Tall Grass (2019) Based on a Stephen King novella about two siblings getting lost in this tall grass when trying to help a child. Very Stephen King-y. Less solid than the other two films I mentioned, but if you want a Stephen King fix, this will probably do it.

Uncut Gems (2019): no pay-off

#24050  Postby arugula2 » May 28, 2020 6:18 am

Image Uncut Gems (2019) (Netflix)

Made it to ~1:08:00. Intense but shallow. Like having my eyes and ears stabbed with a salt lick. Nothing seems to buoy the flat nihilistic monotony of it - not the awkwardly improvised dialogue, not the suspiciously insistent and anchorless soundtrack. I hope something interesting happens past the midpoint, but I gave it an hour to at least imply it would... and it refused. Sandler is somehow less annoying in this than in most things I've seen him in, by playing it full-on douche. How 'bout that.

Dolemite Is My Name (2019): Warmth & funk

#24051  Postby arugula2 » May 28, 2020 6:35 am

Image Dolemite Is My Name (2019) (Netflix)

At times LOL funny and surprisingly moving. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but it does respect the characters and their story (depending on how you feel about titties, because there's a few of those). Dolemite was a blaxploitation phenomenon in the 70s, and this is a 'based on real events' biopic of the man (Rudy Ray Moore, played sympathetically by Eddie Murphy) and the scraggly crew that made it happen, including a glam turn by Wesley Snipes as the film's director.

Oh yes, saw that and enjoyed it. I liked the idea of normality being so close, but being unable to reach it.

Even though he was the film's big name, I think it would've worked better for me without Patrick WIlson. I just hear him as his Conjuring character whenever I hear his voice now. That rock was cool.

Yeah I know what you mean about that, although for me it’s his Insidious character. The rock was indeed cool.

Flight of the Navigator (1986): Pretty good

#24056  Postby arugula2 » May 28, 2020 6:30 pm

Image Flight of the Navigator (1986) (Disney+)

Aside from some self-conscious 80's dialogue, it mostly holds up. Decent cast, interesting direction. An affecting turn by Joey Cramer as the Navigator. Occasional reference to other movies is fun. It avoids a lot of plot contrivances, so character arcs stay somewhat unpredictable.

3 Disneys

Sampled 3 new-to-me things before my Disney+ expires. Maybe 30 mins each. Rise of Skywalker was mind-crushingly boring. Brave was funny, and the animation (hair especially) is among the best I've seen from Disney. Onward was ok. I could see myself unpausing the latter two with family. Skywalker might require caffeine and a podcast in my ears.

We finally watched 1917 yesterday, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Impressive, and of course rather moving.
