The end was weird. But not weird enough to justify the rest.

Do you mean "phoning it in", as in not even trying? I thought "dialing it in" means getting things just right.

Anyway, what I was actually in here for...

Knives Out. Fun fresh take on a classic genre. Loved all the characters (especially the non-character, the young Nazi  ), I like that instead of making the murderer someone who you would have never expected, they made it exactly who you'd think it was and did the work of making you think it wasn't them after all. I didn't really like the house and some things were telegraphed a bit too much, but overall it was a lot of fun!

A husband is repairing the house that he and his wife are moving into to raise their child. But some weird and gross occurrences interrupt and sabotage his work. And he starts to unravel.

It's a bit of an oddity. Quite sexual and grotesque and strangely current. It even attempts to be feminist in ways, but with some shaky results. Overall, it was interesting. But the final section where Liz takes over the lead needed more filling out. Would've liked to see her given more to do and had a better sense of her. Let's see some more interiority!

just watched the trailer, not seen it but definitely looks worth a try - i love house of the devil and we are still here so that vibe swings it in our favour as well

I don't think it'll be your favourite, but I think yous will get something out of it.

My 20 year old wanted to watch Mulholland Drive on the weekend and I suggested Lost Highway.

Good call. What a fantastic film. So much better than I remember. Found footage before it became a thing. Robert Blake is utterly fabulous in this.

Made even better by the discussions with the offspring afterward. So many insights from the boy. His time at Etobicoke School for the Arts clearly well spent.

I remember preferring Mulholland Drive, but it's been long enough that I owe both a rewatch. I have always loved the Bowie album Outide.

Mulholland Drive was the first of his I saw, so it has an edge.

I can’t remember a single thing about Lost Highway.

I remember the obvious from Mulholland Drive.
She battled through in every kind of tribulation,
She revelled in adventure and imagination.
She never listened to no hater, liar,
Breaking boundaries and chasing fire.
Oh, my my! Oh my, she flies!

Same. I put it down to the (seemingly) incoherent story. Probably the closest he came to hybridizing Eraserhead and Twin Peaks. It starts with a domestic drama and ends with a noir mystery.

Outside is a great album that has never been given proper regard in his catalogue.

Have you seen Eraserhead?

I've seen a lot of it, but I don't recall if I watched it fully. I remember a lot of the images.

With Lost Highway I just know there's that scene where the strange man talks to Bill Pullman. And that Trent Reznor produced the soundtrack.
