Loved the book ....fantastic series...

Just watched the 1960 classic 'The Apartment' with Jack Lemon and Shirley MacLaine.
Haven't seen it for years.
What a wonderful movie....

I really tried to like Top Gun: Maverick but I couldn't get by some of its premises.

1) For the success of the mission they were relying on a "miracle" instead accurate weapons systems.

2) That rules of engagement are just annoying bureaucracy to be side-stepped.

3) The 'enemy' wasn't named and we didn't learn anything about them and the movie wanted me to take it on faith that we should be automatically viewing the USA, who were going to bomb them, as the good guys when history says not necessarily.

I was reading an article just there about how Top Gun has surpassed TItanic at the box office and an odd thing struck me about the comments. There's a load of people saying things like, sarcastically, "Who would have thought a non-woke movie with no political agenda could've done so well. Hurr. Hurr."

I'm not sure how they could possibly think that this jingoistic air force recruitment video has "no political agenda". All I could do was laugh in industrial military complex.

Downsizing.
Came across this while scrolling through Netflix and decided to give it a go.
Glad I did.
The story follows Matt Damon who undergoes a radical new procedure that can shrink humans down to about 10 cm in height. (Yeah, once you suspend your disbelief, the rest falls into place.) So, the idea is that this new smaller version of humanity will consume vastly less resources and thus help save the planet. The Damon character yields about 150K in assests in the large world, but because of the down scaling he can draw on that money in the small world and it has the same buying power as about 12M USD.

I won't spoil the rest, but of course, the small world isn't the utopia it was meant to be. (One wry note was the way in which the ecological do gooders who miniaturized themselves for ethical, environmental reasons recreated in miniature the most wasteful and anti-human settlement they could: car-dependent American suburban sprawl of endless single family detached houses!)

The stand out mention goes to Hong Chau who plays a Vietnamese dissident who was miniaturized against her will by the Vietnamese government and smuggled into the US in a television box. (Illegals are a lot harder to detect when they are only 10 cm tall!) She speaks a marvelous hybrid English that just had me laughing (in a good way). Fully fluent and discourse competent but using English in a way that flies in the face of many grammar conventions....spot on in identifying the way in which English is often used outside the Anglosphere.

Anyways, give it a watch if you have the chance.

I highly recommend Neil Simon’s 1978 movie, The Cheap Detective.

It is a superb knockoff of Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, and a couple others I don’t recognize. But as for his treatment of the Bogart movies, this one is as entertaining as the originals. We know the Bogart movies pretty well, so we really enjoy the gags in this great spoof.

I’m kind of surprised I never knew of this movie until very recently.

Saw Oppenheimer today. A movie on a scientific figure done right and focusing on the things people into science actually care about (looking at you The Theory of Everything) which manages to avoid the excesses of some of Nolan's other works.

Highly recommended.

We watched Barbie last night.

Well, it was worth watching once, at least. We borrowed the copy we watched from the library, and I’m glad we didn’t rent it or buy it.

I see Ryan Gosling got an Oscar nomination out of it, which surprises me. I like the way the movie portrayed feminism and patriarchy. Putting Ruth in it (Barbie’s creator) as a character was a very nice touch.

Next up is the movie Oppenheimer. We’re in the queue for it at the library!

This evening, we watched the Finnish movie, Sisu.

Lots and lots of violence. But, it was against Nazis, so you feel pretty good about it.

Finished watching Oppenheimer last night. An excellent movie, but I need to see it more than once. Nolan jumps around a lot with flashbacks and it gets confusing sometimes. We borrowed it from the library, so we have to return it. We’ll get it again after the waiting list for it dies down.

The 1963 Harryhausen movie Jason and the Argonauts was a lot of fun to watch again. I bought a copy of it to replace one I’d record off the air years ago.

Some of those monsters scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, particularly Talos.

Dune Part 2.

In conclusion this is the most reasonable adaptation we could've gotten in movie form.

Part 2 absolutely sticks the landing and hits all the right story beats and preserves the author's original intent rather than reverses it like the awful '84 version.

Every scene of this movie was absolutely beautiful to look at and I think Villeneuve is a master of visual story-telling.

Yeah, Talos scared the shit out of me too. The sound effects of the joints creaking and scraping, the dead-eyed, pitiless stare. That and the dragon's teeth skeletons must surely have been influential on the Terminator concept.
