Housing is at the root of many of the rich world’s problems

Since the second world war, governments across the rich world have made three big mistakes, says Callum Williams

this is a series of articles.

Housing
Shaking the foundations

Housing is at the root of many of the rich world’s problems

How housing became the world’s biggest asset class

Politicians are finally doing something about housing shortages

A decade on from the housing crash, new risks are emerging

Owner-occupation is not always a better deal than renting

Clue is in the name. Housing is only half the problem it was after the coming plague, anyways.

nice summary

For the few who do succeed at making money out of rising property values, he had this message.

"You're making yourself richer at the expense of your children."

And, like the use of non-renewable resources or the pollution of a finite Earth, that kind of intergenerational theft clearly isn't sustainable.

Romans stacked six families to a house before population density killed it off, if that's considered a factor, with mobile technology the possiblity of similar stacking can't be discounted. Too pessimistic.

Stop renting homes built by developers who are just into real estate for profit and owned by predatory landlords who are only motivated by maximising rental returns! Admittedly, that's not really a solution. Residential property prices will still rise and fall, but at least those movements will be due to a desire to live somewhere instead of the predatory machinations of real estate speculators and financial institutions. It beats me how renting one's abode rather than buying it can make a difference to real estate price bubbles and collapses.

Renting isn’t really the issue as no one is really building purpose built rental right now, at least in Canada.
The issue pretty much is foreign money being parked in real estate, which is jacking up prices, which is attracting more money for investment in real estate resulting in empty homes.

No. That was one of my points.

I forgot to bracket the first sentence of my post within sarcasm tags. Sorry 'bout that.

It's OK. You are not the only one to misread me. I have stolen Rationalia's sarcasm emoj just now and try to remember to use it, or the deadpan one in future. Look out for these signposts:

Also, whenever you find my intent "hard to tell", be a good lad and consider the possibility that I may have just forgotten to use the equivalent of canned laughter signs that tell the audience when to laugh, applaud or boo during recordings of "live" comedy productions. ETA: Image

Rental vacancy rates up 64% in Dublin as a result of AirB&B crashing out due to the pandemic.

Having a hard time feeling sorry for those who tied their fortunes to that wagon.
